Since my photography involves quite large images I'm thinking of getting a new monitor. I really don't want the 'full HD' format with the tiddly 1080 pixel screen depth since I don't like trying to work through a letterbox, so I was thinking of one with a resolution of 2560x1440.

Well regarded units like the Dell U2713HM are a bit over 400 on Amazon. However, the panel used in many of the brand-name units is also available from Korean vendors for a lot less money. As described here and here.

I do understand that it would be much harder to get a problem dealt with, and there would be customs charges on top of the original price. I'd also need to beef up my graphics hardware.

Has anybody got any direct experience bringing one of these into the UK?

My cousin bought a couple via ebay. One worked fine, the second one did not work. Having seen them in person, they are reasonable and you get the benefit of WQHD resolution but in terms of things like color gamut and accuracy (e.g. Delta E), they don't seem as good as a Dell Ultrasharp. Perhaps if you got a colorimeter and manually calibrated them, they would be good.

One of the benefits on the iMac from Apple is that the screens are factory calibrated so always have great Delta E.

Thanks, that does sound like he had a poor experience. Anyone else?

Have no experience of them, though I do have a 27 inch VA full HD monitor at 1920 x 1080, which is probably the next best thing, and my next (additional) monitor will be IPS.

I don't understand your comment about working through a letter box though, as 2560 x 1440 is still 16:9, same aspect ratio as normal full HD (like mine) - same letter box! Default text at native resolution will be smaller than text on mine, which is already a bit on the small side for me. 2560 IPS would be good for graphics and spreadsheet work though, can't argue with that.

EDIT - scrap my letterbox comments, I see what you mean by working through one, now. Big photos!
