I want a new device to just quickly browse the internet for research purposes at work. I believe the Chromebook boots up in less than 10 seconds which is ideal for my working environment but wonder whether Google might abandon the OS and concentrate on developing Android. Wi-Fi connection is no problem. Speed is my main wish so should I go for a modestly priced Chromebook SSD drive or invest in a high-end, Windows laptop that is future-proof?

If price is not an issue then get both.

If price is an issue, then do the following:

Get one of them first, doesn't matter which one, then if you like the speed of it, keep it, if not, then sell it and get the other one.

Amazon have the Samsung Series 5 550 Wi-Fi Chromebook on offer for 269.99 at the moment, reduced they say from 379.

While this appears to be a good bargain, the huge price reduction might imply that the product isn't selling well for some reason.

Its cheaper because the Exynos one is out.

Any are fast for web browsing but for anything else, speed is certainly not the what its for.
Windows is starting to lock out Linux so future proofing may well be a thing of the past.

Ah, didn't know about that. Found it on sale at John Lewis for 229:

EDIT: I just found more information:

It looks like the Exynos is an ARM processor, so wouldn't it be seriously less powerful than the Celeron processor in the Series 5 model?

Pros and cons if you check benchmarks.

Obviously cloud computing means speed is more irrelevant.
Exynos loses all the weight whilst massively increasing battery life.

Alan, I believe I could dual boot a Chromebook with a Linux distro.
My two desktops are my day to day workhorses so wonder whether I need to replace my faltering laptop with an expensive machine I'll only use for browsing.
There seems an awful lot of negativity directed at Chromebooks which is rather off-putting.

The simplicity is obviously as bad as it is good.
So you really need to know what you want when you buy it.
