This is exactly what I mean by people just not understanding when food becomes unsafe to eat. Yeah, we've all seen the documentaries and the YouTube videos and, yeah, some of the practices are grim, but that doesn't necessarily make the meat unsafe to eat. And, when it comes to steak, how you cook it makes not one bit of difference.
Think about it. If sell-by dates have been changed to 'suit themselves' and the meat is off, having it well done isn't going to make the slightest bit of difference. I must say though, I've never come across rotten meat in any supermarket, and you'd have to be pretty stupid to cook off meat, as it's so blindingly obvious when it's not right.
As for any bacteria, they live and breed on the surface of the meat, so cooking it well-done, medium OR rare is doing exactly the same thing - killing (most of) the surface bacteria.
If you were talking about mince, I would agree. Steak - no, you're wrong.
