BRITAIN’S biggest talent show looks to be losing its X Factor after a paltry turnout for some very low-key auditions.

Just 22 people tried their luck at its roadshow in Colchester, Essex, and only 30 hopefuls bothered to perform in Bangor, North Wales, days later over the Easter weekend.

Ben Howard, who runs Keep Colchester Cool to promote the town’s music scene, said: “I would like to think it was because The X Factor has lost its X Factor, not Colchester, but it was terribly promoted.”

Producers on Simon Cowell’s show are used to long queues of wannabes but instead they had to scour the streets to persuade passers-by to give the judging panel a song.

Cher Townrow, 40, had an *unsuccessful audition in Colchester, which had 100 singers last year. She said: “I was just walking past and saw the sign.

“I’m surprised no one else was here though.

“There aren’t any people. Maybe it’s the cold weather or perhaps people have just lost interest.”

Richard Birch, who was at the audition in Bangor, said: “There was just an A4 sheet with The X Factor written on it to *advertise it.” He added: “From 9.30am there were about 30 people who came in and it was dead from 1.30pm.”

Despite the dwindling numbers, X Factor bosses insisted the ITV show was getting the same huge number of applications as usual.

A spokesman said: “These ‘mobile’ auditions give people a chance from around the country who may not be able to get to the bigger auditions.

The X Factor is way bigger than it was when it first started and this is in no way indicative of a decline in popularity.

“For the mobile, the highest we have had was in Great Yarmouth and Hull, where we had about 100 people attending.

“The lowest was Colchester with only 22, so the numbers do vary from location to location. But applications are in the thousands and are strong and healthy this year.”

The poor turnout at recent roadshow auditions comes after the Mirror revealed that Liverpool had been excluded from the show’s search for this year’s pop star. Merseyside has produced an impressive host of winners and finalists, including Rebecca Ferguson, Chris Maloney and Marcus Collins.

Show sources claimed they were ditching the city as they felt there was not enough talent to warrant another visit this year.

But the suggestion was rubbished by Scousers, who pointed out their recent track record on The X Factor was second-to-none.

The Mirror Online recently revealed that Simon Cowell will make his return to this year’s X Factor by appearing on the show’s live finals on a satellite link.

The music mogul, who last appeared as a regular in 2010, will be an “extra factor” for the live finals in a bid to boost poor ratings.

Cowell, 53, will be beamed into the studio, giving his famous acid-tongued comments from Los Angeles, where he will be starring on the US version of the hit show.

He will appear regularly alongside the permanent panel of four – and also hopes to make a video contribution at Judges’ Houses, to give his opinions on which 12 contestants should make the final stages of the competition.

The judges for this year's show haven't yet been announced, but Reggiue Yates - the co-host of rival talent contest The Voice - says he thinks they've got a sexier line-up on their panel compared to their ITV rivals.

We're not so sure, Louis Walsh is seriously easy on the eye.

On the Isle of Wight there were queues round the block! And that is with very little publicity.

It's like some media outlets are willing it to fail this year.

Say, there isn't as much talent this year, I really hope they cut the no. of audition shows because last years were awful.
