Hi

My aunt has got a new laptop and is having a few problems with it, so I've said I'll log in remotely and have a look. I know it should be straightforward, but I've never actually had to do it.

I've got the client for my Macbook, what steps does my aunt have to do at her end to give me remote access? We're not on the same network.

thanks!

Which client? Microsoft Remote Desktop?

You would be much better with TeamViewer at both ends.

I was going to do it with the built-in client since she wouldn't need to install anything, but logmein would work and I dabbled with that.

What's the best way?

The most pain free from the point of view of the client is TeamViewer IMHO.

You can only connect via Remote Desktop to machines that are running Professional versions of Windows or above. This is unlikely to be the case with your aunts laptop so a 3rd party utility is necessary. I would have also recommended TeamViewer.

If both machines have Chrome installed there's a simple extension in the web store called "Chrome Remote Desktop".

You install the extension and it appears on the homepage. Your aunt then clicks on it and then clicks the "share" button. It gives her an access code that she tells you over the phone. You click on the "Access" button and put in the code she gave you. Bingo, you're controlling her computer.

Logmein and TeamViewer are both good choices, but I find Teamviewer is easier for the 'other person' to get up and running. Simply email them the link to the executable, they click it and give permission for it to be run and then read out the ID Number and password to you over the phone. The program doesn't need to be installed, they can just run it whenever they need your assistance.

The following executable link can be found on the TeamViewer homepage as 'Join Remote Control Session' (underneath the big green 'Download' button).

I didn't know about that, cheers! She's not running Chrome though, and more than one browser just gets confusing for her. I'll stick with TeamViewer. Doing it this afternoon so fingers crossed.

TeamViewer worked a treat, thanks for the tips.

Managed to seamless transfer some child porn and have called the police.
