Panasonic TXL32E5B issues
My first LCD TV is less than a week old and I love the picture. It also enables me to connect what I want. However, there are a few (minor) issues that I'd like to clear up.
Not sure whether to start a thread for each, or try to manage replies to all from this thread. Anyway, let's start with a summary of the points to come: 1) DVD Input B/W 2) SCART auto-switching 3) Finding a Suitable TV Stand .. and a list of connected equipment - just to put you in the picture (no pun intended): a) Topfield TF5800 recorder (Toppy) b) Denon surround sound based on AVR-F100, including DVD player and 5.1 speakers c) Two USB HDDs d) Wired internet via TP-Link Powerline adaptors and ADSL modem to a landline 1) DVD Input B/W The Panasonic's single SCART connection AV1 (via adaptor lead) is taken up by the Toppy - no choice there - so I plumped for component video for the DVD using AV2 (another adaptor lead). There are SCART, S-Video and Composite alternatives at the DVD player. Digital audio goes straight to the Denon. Problem - the TV picture is black-and-white! Initially, one of the component connections wasn't properly home at the TV end, but now it is. History Note - The DVD player was connected to the previous TV (now in the skip) by SCART and worked a treat. The reason I'm not using SCART now is that although I have a SCART switch box I didn't want to fiddle about manually switching between SCART inputs when I can change between AV1 and AV2 using the TV remote. I've examined the DVD player and AVR setups and found nothing of relevance. The TV video setup doesn't provide any options for AV2, other than re-naming it. Any ideas? Richard PS Think I'll start new threads for the other two issues. One issue at a time though. |

How exactly have you got the DVD connected to the TV? I presume you are using the Composite video out on the DVD player plugged into the Yellow/Green socket of the Component video adapter cable? On the basis that you haven't said that the DVD supports Component video so would use all three video connectors.
If you are using Composite then it sounds like you may have the AV2 input set to Composite not Video mode. According to the online manual you select AV 2 in the list of sources using the Up/Down arrow buttons then switch modes using the Left/Right arrow buttons. I have seen a spec for the DVD player with the Denon system you quoted that suggests it has Composite video outs. If it does then that would certainly be a far better option than Composite. Again if you set the wrong video mode for AV 2 then it is always possible you could get odd results. |

You'll get a B&W image from Component on the TV if the input isn't switched correctly. The Y socket is Luma which is B&W. So we can say that the Component out on the Denon kit is working (as long as that's what you connected to) and that the TV just needs setting right. From the manuals and images I have seen online, the DVD part of the AVR-F100 looks like it has Component out LINK.
chrisjr is on the right lines with setting up AV2 for Component. Just read your manual. It's straight forward. You have two other topics to cover: SCART switching and finding a stand. TBH, finding a stand is 90% about personal style choices. There's no way we can predict what you'll like. So save yourself some time and just do a Google image search for "TV stand cabinet" and then take it from there. Let us know how we can help with SCART switching. |

Thanks for pointing me to the Video/Component setting for AV2. Setting it to Component has fixed that issue. Thanks to Chris Frost too. While investigating this problem, I solved another lurking issue (nothing to do with the TV), and that is how to hear surround sound using DTS encoding. |
