Pastry Blender
Does anyone use a pastry blender to make pastry?
I've never quite got the 'work in the fat with your fingertips' bit. And neither have I really got the use a blender for it, and don't have a food processor. So it looks as if a pastry blender would be worth a try. Does anyone have any experience/opinions? And does anyone know good make/models that they would recommend? All u need to do is rub the butter and flour together between your fingers until it forms a breadcrumb like texture.

I don't eat dairy, and the non-dairy margarines I use tend to melt and become greasy too often. Even if I've cut them into squares and frozen them before trying to rub them into the flour.

I use mine all the time to make pastry and crumbles, anything that needs the fat rubbing into the flour.
Quick, clean and easy to use. No scraping a fat/flour mix off your fingers when you've done and ready in a quarter of the time it takes to rub with fingers. I've got 2, one with wire and one with blades and use the wire one most of the time but thats only because its easier to hold due to having a wooden handle. Best kitchen utensil I've got as far as I'm concerned, I'd recommend them to anybody. |

Personally I use the back of a fork to breadcrumb fat and flour- works fine for me. I do own a food processor which I use for large amounts of breadcrumbing, but for just one pie I prefer the fork.
Just squish the fork through the fat and it will end up like breadcrumbs. |

I bought one when I was out today. I like to make a proportion of my purchases from small specialist shops, so just bought one. I'll see how it works.
