TV DX receiving distant TV signals

A television and an aerial. Seriously that's all I had, a basic LG tv and a communal aerial somewhere on the roof top of my flat when I received three different German muxes. The only thing I would say is decide which country you would like to dx as the Netherlands and Belgium use predominantly vertical signals so you would need to polarise your aerial vertically otherwise horizontal polarisation will be fine for France, Germany and Denmark.

What about band 1 TV?

Hi bexdx,

We are on the tail-end of Band 1 TVDX, as most countries of the world have now gone through digital switch-over, and are no longer transmitting on Band 1.
There are a few exceptions.
For a couple more years we should see Russia.
This year, the other countries still using Band 1 analogue (Ukraine and Belarus), are also still available.
As I type this, I'm getting pictures from Russia 1 on channel R1 (49.75 MHz).

I'm using a Band 1 "H" type antenna (horizontal polarization), at about 18 feet above ground level, then in to an HS Publications D100 DXTV box feeding an old JVC CX-610 TV (which can detect SECAM colour). I'm in Lincoln, UK.

The above signals are only received during "Sporadic E" openings (mainly confined to summer time, and cannot be predicted), so don't expect constant reception!

Exotic reception via "Double-Hop Sporadic E" can sometimes occur. This brings in Jordan on channel E3 (55.25 MHz). I'm not sure when Jordan will switch off Band 1 analogue.

Hope this helps,

Chris.

With all of the high pressure sat over Scandinavia at the moment I was hoping for some good TV DX, but alas no. I had the Noord Holland MUX in yesterday but breaking up. Not a sausage from Denmark or Germany though.

Is anyone else getting any DX at the moment?

Hi Jon,

No TV here either. I kept on checking. Most unusual, as there was so much tropo lift, but not affecting UHF.

I used to see plenty of tropo from Denmark, Netherlands and Germany in the late 80s and early 90s in Louth. Since DSO, I've not detected a single DTV mux or even any interference here.

I guess DTV dx-ing just isn't as easy or accessible as analogue.

Hi Mark,

You may well be right. I only moved to Lincolnshire in 2010, so had missed any analogue DX there may have been, at this location.
I have received Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and, on one occasion, France via DTT.
I use a fixed UHF antenna, vertically polarized, pointing in the direction of Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Also, there is a horizontally polarised, rotatable UHF antenna. Some German, most French and some Belgian TXs are horizontally polarized. Most Belgian and all Dutch DTT TXs are vertically polarised.

My most frequent DX visitor is from Netherlands on UHF39, however there was no reception during the most recent lift, which is rather unusual.

The link below, is very useful for knowing "where to look" for TV DX.

Best regards,

Chris (Lincoln, UK)

Many thanks Chris

I will certainly keep an eye on CH39 as it seems the most promising. I had no idea they were using vertical polarisation either.

Whilst digital is not as DX-friendly as analogue, its likely also the case that many of the the transmit aerials are now directional, where in the past they were more or less omni-directional, with less signal (from transmitters near the coast of those countries) going out to sea in the direction of the UK.

Hello

The nice weather has started, just wondering if anyone has had any TV DX this year? It has been very quiet, so far, here on the East Coast of LIncs. It seems that DX starts later and later each year (or is it just me?), and seems to now go on until November (if we are lucky).

Best regards

Jon

Hi Jon,

Same here in Lincoln. No DX to report, so far this year.

Best regards,

Chris.

Hi

Finally, after a long wait, I have the first TV DX of the year. Signals coming in very strong and constant on CH 52 from Holland (TV West Plex). The Uutrecht plex (CH50) has been in, as has the Noord-Holland plex on CH39. The latter two are intermittent. Hopefully other people are getting some DX too.

There is also a lift on FM radio too, the band is full of Dutch radio stations at the moment.

Happy DX

Jon

The DX continues again today. It is better than yesterday, with the Uutrech mux (Ch 50), the TV West mux (Ch 52), the Noord-Holland mux (Ch 39) and the Omrop Fryslan mux (Ch 32) all active and stable this evening.

Where are the transmitters in Holland broadcasting on channel 52. What would be the bearing from Ramsgate in Kent.

I ask because I am thinking of reorienting my roof aerial for better reception of channel 52 from Dunkerque and want to avoid co-chanelling.

These are the towers transmitting on CH 52.

I've looked up the polarity for Dunkerque.... Assuming it is the Dunkerque-Hazebrouck/Monts de Cat transmitter, that is horizontal. Because the Netherlands is on vertical polarity, there probably isn't much chance of co-channel interference.

I suspect that my signals are from the Alticom Tower near Rotterdam (which is the 9th tallest structure in Holland according to WIkiPedia https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_..._van_Nederland)

Sadly no DX so far today.

Best regards

Jon

Lately have had some amazing strength and quality figures from Dunkerque and Lille transmitters.

Good morning DXers

Looks like it could be a good one. I have 4 Dutch Muxes coming in this morning already. Hope the nice weather is being DX friendly for you guys too.

I got my 1st DTV DX today to France. I appear to of got Normandy. I'm surprised with this as I only have a loft antenna and I can't even pick up all the local Freeview stations. I got some videos and pictures I will put up later.

Well done! It seems to be a good day for DXing, strong signals here on the East coast of Lincs. Where exactly are you based?

When you get the bug for it you'll probably want to see what might be possible with an external aerial.

Best regards

I live in Bexhill. I'm not sure what tx I'ms receiving. I assume it could be Lille as my tx aerial faces that sort of direction. If it is Lille then it's about 113 miles in a straight line.

I have put some video's and pictures below:

I did do a few more videos but I'm having trouble uploading them at the moment. I'm really surprised by the visual quality of the channels. Most/if not all were in HD, had nice crisp images along with good audio quality.

As you were getting France 3 Haute Normandie and La Chaîne Normande, that would have been Neufchâtel-en-Bray/Croixdalle or Rouen/Grand Couronne.

See here - http://www.tvnt.net/forum/76-seine-m...pp-t12714.html

Yes, as of a few weeks ago France's entire digital terrestrial service switched to HD.

I'd love to join in with this, but I very much doubt I'd get anything on an indoor aerial in a ground floor flat.

Meant to post this earlier, but after a dry spell, finally had some DX on Monday evening, Utrecht, Noord Holland and West Muxes.

I've been waiting for a decent lift, because a visitor to the house "helpfully" announced that they had retuned the TV for me - losing all of the stored DX channels in the process (thanks for that!).

Happy DX
