I don't honestly think it's in doubt that Thatcher divided the country more than any other modern PM, is it? And on that basis alone, she didn't deserve today.

The fact that the Labour govt were in on it is neither here nor there as far my view is concerned. It's wrong whichever way you look at it.

I think Susie's post is an excellent summing up.

I could always be wrong (technically, in theory ) but I think the significant part of that quote from 5 Live was the "that don't matter" epithet at the end. See Scottish poll tax for details.

There was no such thing as society. Only voters who liked you or could be swung your way.

Not where I was at 9.00am Chin. I live in the centre and was trying to get to the Temple tube station to get to work. I had to shuffle my way around at least ten military bands and all their instruments; billions of policemen and about 100 police dogs. Not too many members of the general public however

Don't be so mean-spirited chin.
Not everybody can aspire to your idea of the perfect politician - an oxymoron if ever I heard one.

So the thousands of people lining the streets were a figment of everybody's imagination were they?
Did you watch the Funeral service or were you too busy getting yourself worked up into a red-hot rage?

I thought it was all extremely impressive - pomp and circumstance being one of the few good things this country can still do.
My plaudits went to the Bearer Party from the Armed Services who were utterly magnificent and to Amanda Thatcher for her
impeccable reading from the scriptures.

You no doubt would have been able to do both in your sleep.......
At least give credit where credit is due chin - it won't kill you!

Curiously the pictures of the deserted streets I was looking at earlier seem to have disappeared. Conspiracy?

Can anyone help please? I am trawling though Twitter and Facebook now.

Well I heard that if there was a General Election today, and Mrs T was leader of the Conservative Party, she would win with a comfortable majority. There would be no need for a coalition government.

Such was the division in the country, that she won three successive elections and increased her majority.

Maybe you were dreaming. There was a really good turn out considering a lot of her supporters were at work.

In what way does that even begin to question the notion of her being divisive? Seriously - that's your answer?

One could argue that PMs since have been more divisive as they have not been as popular.

Go on then - argue it!

I think you'd be very hard pushed indeed to show that.

As you well know within politics, there are "lies, damned lies, and statistics". I suspect we could each find a statistic that would prove the point.

I don't have the time to do the research.

Oh... well then, if it's just on pure opinion, then you're definitely wrong! I can't see many people, Pro or Anti Mrs T, who would disagree that she was the most divisive modern PM. The Pro's would see this as a good thing, but I can't see how anyone else would even come close.

(edit) Who else do you think is even in the frame?

Did David Mellor and Iain Dale contribute to the coverage on LBC, or was it just Ferrari in the end? I heard a tiny bit just before 1pm and it was only NF who was on.

I didn't put LBC on at all this morning - only BBC 24hour news which I suspect was a great deal better than NF.
As for DM and ID they were paraded before Adam Bolton on Sky and said absolutely nothing of any consequence although
DM was a great deal more articulate than ID.
For some reason the latter chose to wear a particularly hideous loden coat which did nothing for his complexion.
Probably made in Germany.

The barriers and the bollards were ready but the throngs never came.

Looks like it was pouring with rain. Why would people want to stand out getting soaked, when they can watch it in comfort on tv.

Perhaps she was watching at the wrong place! I didn't see a lot of television, but what I did see there were certainly crowds there. I heard a lot on the radio, and plenty of applause and cheers.

Sky News reporting that some areas where barriers were erected were almost empty:

http://news.sky.com/story/1079212/ba...ld-at-st-pauls

Security across the capital was tight but there appeared to be far smaller crowds than expected, with some areas where barriers were erected almost empty.
Scotland Yard said no arrests were made in London during the morning, although many onlookers were furious that taxpayers were paying most of the funeral bill.
