Yes Chin. It started in the middle of Clive's show.

I imagine this will be covered by Nick F, as well as James.

He's stood down as an MP, which of course he should do if he's switching allegiance.

It would have had a good splattering in Iain Dales show tonight if he was in John Stapleton i believe although he might give it a spin.

Excellent stuff from Douglas Carswell and being brave enough to force a by election also.

And all breaking on the JOB show how appropriate.

Cheers for that VQ. I understand Salmond won the debate?

There's talk on the other threads about the Tories putting Boris up against him.

Given that Boris wants to slap a huge airport out Clacton way, I'm not sure he'd have the support.

I can't stick Boris, but I think people vote for his persona rather than his politics. I thought his seat had already been decided?

No chance in my opinion as Boris will find it harder to do the Mayor job as well from clacton rather then the London seat he really wants.

He's applied to be the Tory candidate for Uxbridge, but he has to be selected first. It's not a done deal. Not sure who else is up against him though.

Incredible that some apologists are jumping on Carswell rather than 1400 systematically abused children over 13 years. Shameful from Miliband who said nothing about Rotherham.

The sooner this unpleasant buffoon goes the better for all concerned.

Well thats a view when he does ask boris on NF show he hardly knows any of the answers to the questions.

He is entertaining though in the wrong way.

Especially when NF keeps asking him about the cable car fare and he still does not know.

So many people talking like Ukip are going to get their first MP. I think the right of centre vote in Clacton will spilt between the Tories and Ukip and let Labour in (they were second behind the Tories at the general election).

It depends Carswell will have thought hard about this, and if he takes a significant number of his local party with him,he will have good organisation apparently he had been in talks with UKIP since june.

He will not have done this lightly i expect him to win the by election.

I think he's more likely to win it because it's a by-election and not a general election. Turn out tends to be lower, which means that the hard-core UKIP voters (who are more motivated to turn out) will have a disproportionate effect.

It will be interesting, though.

Clacton has primarily an elderly population, augmented with it being something of a dormitory town for the homeless, pushed into old holiday accommodation.

It also has a reasonable eastern european population.

My colleagues mum lives there, and she is very much old Labour but could defect.

I would be surprised if Carswell lost the seat at a GE to be honest, but as you say it will be interesting.

Taken from another place !!

Yes, I heard that. He sounded really angry as he thought he was the 'official candidate' for Clacton, but obviously UKIP thought an existing MP may have a better chance of winning.

Thinking of moving to Scotland! All I hear on LBC is bloody Tories , Clegg and UKIP! ! I can see exactly why the Scots want to leave the Union.

I too believe that UKIP will split the right of centre vote but it will now go three ways- between Tories, UKIP and New Labour. Not that it will make much of a difference really overall as with no real Socialist/left wing candidates (and I am talking about proper Socialists/ Left wingers not those who the likes of Mike Rabbit consider to be- such as JOB) standing the next government and its members will remain the same as it has for the past 50 years - ie right wing capitalists.

Roger Lord the guy that was going to stand as the UKIP candidate for Clacton said to BBC News
Quote:
“We are not a party that stands down... we don't bend, we don't break. We fight.”

He told LBC
Quote:
“speaking to James O'Brien this morning, Roger Lord said he may now fight for the seat as a Conservative in the up-coming by-election.”

That is what I like to see in a politician, commitment, knows what he wants !

(*UKIP drops him like a hot potato* *Conservatives say no thank you* )

Just a thought. If the 'Yes to Independence' win the referendum, will be become known as the Ununited Kingdom?

Dunno, but the Labour party will lose around 50 seats!

Do we really need to hear the terrorist's voices on LBC? Surely it is just giving them the oxygen of publicity? I am sorry to say , but Nick Ferris seems to be relishing imparting terrible news.

I didn't think it was necessary. I think we can probably all imagine the scene without the gratuitous soundtrack, and it's not as if they don't know who the English terrorist guy is. The stuff about Obama was clearly rehearsed, and in any case, if you were about to be beheaded, you'd say anything, so what's the point of repeating it? Terrible thing also for the family to know that people are listening to their son's last words and eagerly watching the video on YouTube.

A 10% salary increase for MPs?
We must be a load of mugs.
Has anyone told them that this is a time of austerity?
Most of them work only part time as MPs and are moonlighting elsewhere.
Will anyone consider paying me £70k + expenses + a pension + a subsidised bar and restaurant for doing a part time job? I don't think so.
Ooooooh, I'm angry. . .
