Apple TV using unblock us what other content?
L_Bee

I know a lot of people use that site to get access to the US Netflix and other countries, firstly how easy is it to navigate on the box ie. do you have to go through a lot of menus to change the location every time you want or does it just have all the content in one place?

Also what other content can we get by using the unblock us system? I know one of the apps in the US is Hulu which is kind of like iplayer but do we have to pay extra for that and what shows does it have / is it just for a particular channel?

Any other content from US or other countries people have used on there?

Thanks

Hi!

On the AppleTV, you won't have access to a lot things. With Unblock-Us as you said you will be able to change Netflix region (that you do on Unblock's website, not the ATV) and Hulu+ which you have to subscribe to. That's it.

With a computer or smartphone, thx to Unblock-Us you'll be able to access Pandora, iHeart Radio, networks websites like FOX, ABC, CW etc...

Check the list: http://support.unblock-us.com/custom...upported-sites

Like I said, you change the Netflix region directly on Unblock website, on a computer, or their mobile website. Super easy to use.

Cheers!

Ok thanks but if its an app from the US are you able to change the iTunes country too or do they require credit card details?

And on that page the US Netflix says you need a US subscription?

With netflix, you can use a UK subscription then a service like unblock-us to watch netflix US.

The beauty of unblock-US is that is done at the DNS server level so you can do the settings on your router then the US material is available to any device connecting via your home network (for example).

There are free ways of doing it that only work on PC.

Easiest way is to just configure your router. Look on unblocks website how to set up - then look for your router. This way you can use your ps3 , computer , apple tv , smart tv and so on on unblock without needing to change their dns settings.

Thanks all done been watching some stuff on CBS, internet seems slower though, does it have any effect?

Also there is nothing on Apple TV US, as you have to subscribe to Hulu Plus (im guessing you need a US card for that) so I don't see much point in changing the itunes store on that?

I generally stay on the UK Apple TV platform as it has Netflix which is good enough. The US one does include Hulu, but unless you subscribe it has no advantage.

Pity Lovefilm is not on the ATV.

DNS can't affect the speed of your internet connection, but maybe CBS website has some issue tho.

For Hulu Plus, you need a US debit card OR credit on your US iTunes account. YOu can redeem an account by buying iTunes Gift Cards on the internet.

Except that, like I said in my first message, there's nothing else on the AppleTV that you can't have by setting yours on UK.

Cheers!

The fact that iPlayer is not on the Apple TV seems like an act of belligerence when it's on every other device on the planet with a colour display or an HDMI connection.

It does seem strange, since Apple had one the the first apps for BBC iPlayer, maybe it has something to do with the BBC

It is more likely to be Apple here in this case. If you look at their ATV platform, it is almost exclusively US based. The fact that there is a Netflix app in the UK is only because there is a Netflix app in the US.

It is however extremely annoying. The Apple TV would make a perfect platform for the BBC, Lovefilm and pretty much any other app. But I suspect we will have to wait until Apple allow 3rd party apps on the platform. Maybe this will happen in time for their fabled full sized Apple TV?

Agree it's very annoying, I mean they have the App already there in place on other iOS devices. Maybe it's a region thing and the BBC don't want the App available to none UK households. I think Apple have all but given up on the Apple TV box and are concentrating on the full Tv as you mentioned.

I don't think it is a region thing. Afterall, the BBC are totally fine with their iPlayer (website or desktop client) to be happily installed wherever you are - they control access via IP address checks. Also, as you mention, the BBC have an iOS app which although is downloaded only on a UK iTunes account, anyone in the world can create a UK iTunes account. It is blocked again by IP address.

Likewise, I don't think that Apple are giving up on the set top box, but I think you are in the right ball park (to borrow an American term for want of a better one).

I suspect (hope) Apple will open up the platform to developers when the new full TV is available. I don't think Apple will kill the small box, since most people will not yet want to buy a full new TV. Everyone has already recently done that. Some will buy the big box, but most will want a small set top box, although the final product may be quite different to what we already have.

It's a complex world out there in IPTV and the BBC have recently said that unless some sort of platform standards are created, it will be extremely difficult for broadcasters to cover every piece of hardware out there, and they certainly have a point. The big boys, BBC, Netflix etc cover a large range of platforms. Smaller broadcasters simply can't follow.

But I assume if the App was available, non UK users could use unblock us to view BBC content?

Absolutely or any other SmartDNS or VPN service.

As long as they put basic blocks in place, the content providers are happy.

Remember, the content providers make money in either case, but they still want general region restrictions so they can sell the product multiple times, which is a fair point.

Happens to me all the time. it might be your internet address has changed. I usually go to the website via my phone and on the homepage it will provide a link to change my address. When I return to Netflix everything works ok. It's a bit of a pain.

What do you mean my Internet address has changed ?

Some ISP's change your external IP address at regular intervals. Normally you would not see this as it happens behind the scenes. There are some instances though where it can be noticed. One is if you run your own server at home, and another is through a Smart DNS provider.

Your Smart DNS account is assigned to your external IP address. This is how your DNS provider can confirm you are a paying customer. If your ISP changes your external IP address, it will look to your DNS provider that you are not an official customer.

Some ISPs do this daily, some weekly and others at irregular intervals.

I don't know about unblockus, but my provider Overplay offers a way to automate this, and I've put up instructions here. Works a treat and you never have to think about it again, once it is in motion.
