I was going to make gravy today but I've got no cornflour. Can it be made with ordinary flour ?
The method I use is to get the veg water in a pan along with a couple of stock cubes, then I mix cornflour and water into a paste and use tis paste to thicken the stock / veg water.

Yes it's fine. However you have to cook it long enough to cook the flour or it tastes a bit um, floury.
I use the pan the meat cooked in, then add the flour to form a paste with the meat juices, cook it off then add the carrot water.

Thanks. Yes, that's the most common way to make gravy, but I have used my way for years I also use the meat juices.

We never used cornflour to make gravy as far as i can remember from when I was very young until a few years back when i was still going over to my parents for Sunday dinner.

Always used normal flour, with the juice and fat from the meat, with a tiny bit of gravy browning to give it a bit of colour, and may put a bit of Bisto powder in depending on the meat. mix it all together as it it is heating up, then add a bit of veg water to thin it back down to required thickness.

Used to love Mums gravy and then when she could not make it due to ill health Dad took over or me.

Strange that while i used to make it at my parents place, i can never get it the same here at home.

I tried those gravy pots today, they are ok, but a bit strong in flavour and not that thick, but ok for quickness.

I prefer flour actually, just cook it a bit longer.

Which is what we used to do, but with the fat of the meat instead of butter.
