Common injury in cats?

Hi all - a cat question if I may?

My boy Fudge has just come back from his daily wander outside and I noticed that, besides losing hs collar (again!), he has a layer of skin hanging off the back pad (the wrist/pisiform).

The skin almost looks like if you had a blister which dried out and the skin fell off. There doesn't appear to be any cut or bleeding beneath and the skin hanging there is a clean cone shape, not all ragged.

Is it common for the skin to come off here? It doesn't appear to be causing him any problems walking and he's not licking at it either. I can't tell if he's sustained an injury from climbing fences or if the skin was just dry and it has come off. Do you think I should take him to the vets tomorrow?

Google allergy in cats.this could be the cause.
Edit I googled it and came up with eosinophilic granuloma.

could he have scrapped it when he was climbing over something, one of my old cats cut the back of his leg when he was climbing down , he skidded and took the skin off....but it might be a good idea to get it checked by a vet

I've had a look and it doesn't look like this - he doesn't have a any swelling or ulcerations, it just looks like a layer of dry skin has come off.

Yes, highly likely. Every day when I let him out the back garden he jumps straight up the fence which is quite high. It's possible that he slipped and tore the skin off. Looking a little closer, one of his claws on the same paw is very ragged and split - could be from the same thing.

I will take him in tomorrow to get checked up although that skin appears to have come off now and had I not seen it earlier, I wouldn't have known anything was wrong. It looks completely normal now!

to be honest if it looks normal i wouldnt take him to the vet , i'd just keep an eye on it unless he seems to be in pain...it sounds like he might have slipped and damaged the skin which dried and maybe he did the same thing again and took the dead skin off...??
the damaged claw could definitely be from the same thing, especially if he got it caught.

Some rather unpleasant comments on this thread, I'm not a cat person but really??

For the OP, the concern with cat injuries is that they may be the result of a bite (from other cats/animals) and therefore prone to infection.

I'd keep a close eye, maybe keep him in for a few a days to make sure it's kept clean and dry, then if it gets worse or doesn't improve, pop up to the vets.

It's difficult with superficial wounds on pets to know what to do IMO, the cost of having a small scratch clean and dressed can be £50 +, not to mention the stress of putting a pet through being poked and prodded, when often they heal just fine without interference.

Hope all heals well

This is a sensible link for anyone faced with a cat with a wound.

Never seen that myself and I've had cats all my life. I'd get it checked.

Thanks all (well, majority)! I took Fudge to the vets after work as I wanted to get it checked just in case. Better safe than sorry I guess.

The vet gave him a once over and pulled the scab off. Poor Fudge wasn't very pleased and it did bleed a little. She thinks he may have stepped on something. She cleaned it up and has given me some antibiotics to give him over the next few days. With that and his worming tablet which was due it came to £43. As expected but at least I know he should be ok.

Thanks again for the replies
