Who do you think had a better career overall?

Better peak?

Bigger era?

Who do you think was a bigger competition to Madonna?

I adore Cyndi but I'd say Janet was more commercially successful overall. I wouldn't say either of them were competition for Madonna though.

ETA: Happy to be proven wrong on the commercially successful thing. I haven't looked at figures. Just a general observation that could be totally wrong.

Neither compare to Madonna...although both are artistically focused and both adapted their sounds/visuals similarly to a degree.

I adore both of them so much!

I mean its Control, Rhythm Nation, Janet., Velvet ROpe, All For You, Damita Jo, 20 Y.O, Discipline VS Shes So Unusual, True Colours, A Night To Remember, Hat FUll Of Stars, Sisters Of Avalon, Shine, At Last, Bring Ya To The Brink and Memphis Blues

Control, RHythm Nation, Janet, Velvet Rope, Damita Jo and Discpline i ADORE and love

Shes So Unusual, Night To Remember, Hat Full Of Stars, Sisters O Avalon and Bring Ya To The Brink i adore.

6 Vs 5....toughie ))

Cyldi Lauper has sold between 50 - 60 million RECORDS....Janet has sold 120 million RECORDS as far as i know...

Compared to Madonna she has sold over 300 million RECORDS.

And Kylie and Britney are sandwiched between both Cyndi and Janet in those respects too.

Janet all the way!

One of the best female dancers that have ever graced the industry! I've never been a big fan of her songs, but her videos and performances are all incredible. Besides, I can't stand Cyndi Lauper's voice. It's one of those voices that you either love or hate and I hate it.

Cyndi does have a tendency to over sing. However, there are some songs where she sings very nicely like "Time After Time" "Sally's Pidgeons" and "I Drove All Night."

Does anyone know any other songs like these by Cyndi? I do like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" but when I've listened to some of her other songs, her vocals seem to screechy for me. But I really like these other songs by her.

As for the OP, I think Janet has had a more successful career although I don't think Janet ever had such an iconic hit like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

on CYndis Bring Ya To The Brink albums she sings with a more restricted vocal....reminded me a lil of RObyns style actually on that album (which makes sense as she worked with Kleerup on some songs) Lay Me Down in particular is in that vein...worth a check

As for iconic songs....i think Cyndi got lucky with "girls just wanna have fun" in fact the majority of songs on her debut were not written by her or stemmed originally by her anyway which i guess is why it was her most successful...it was designed for public and commercial appeal...comapred to whatwas to come later on where it did stem from her much more....but her label wanted her to compete with Madonna, Prince, Springsteen with social commentaries, sound, performance etc and it just didnt work out as time went on sadly....luckily the ones that stuck by her have seen what she is capable of independant from the label

Oh gosh, it kills me to say this, because I am Cyndi's number 1 fan, I mean I love and adore her, I have every album she ever made and Twelve Deadly Cyns was the first record I ever bought...........but Janet is probably, infact is more successful, though Cyndi has been more in the starlight over recent years, albeit it not the dizzy heights that she might once have been.

Oh songs to recommend, Josh Pinder as always you're on hand to help out - Lay Me Down should have been a single, and Into The Nightlife should have been a hit and Bring Ya To The Brink SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOP TEN

thumbs are up! thank ya partner!

Janet seems to have disappeared :/ confussled like after her VMAs performance sh just went away did her Number 1s Tour in 2011....i do hope she goes back to her Pop roots though.

As for Cyn i have to say that Memphis Blues is such a bad album :/ i mean her vocals are on point but damn it is not my style at all lol!

Thats something i think she has in common with Xtina...every album is a severe changeup in look, style, its a sharp contrast every time.

agreed lay Me Down should have done so so so much as a single release hot off of Robyn reaching a peak that year and all (Every Heartbeat being a chart topper and headlining on Madonnas Sticky & Sweet Tour as a support artist)

and agreed i found it absurd...she went on graham norton, she did Loose Women, she went on gmtv, she eprformed some venue gigs and the album failed to chart??? WTF!!

Sadly i have just read around that Janet has effectively "retired" from the Music, Film sand Entertainment industry and has moved to one of her homes with her new husband and has apparently converted to Islam?

Dont know how much to read into this but apparently she has planned a break for a while ever since Discipline "bombed" commercially worldwide and she dropped Island records as her label....she planned (and did) her world tour for her fans and now effectively that is it for Miss Jackson

Personally i hope it isnt "permanent" but damn that is deflating news!

Ugh no! Every time I here

"All my girls at the party look at that body
Shaking that thing like ya never did see
Got a nice package alright
Guess I'm gonna have to ride it tonight"

I just wanna get up and dance and listen to Janet all over again! One of the best divas of the last twenty years.
