While Ofcom gave the mobile networks Licences to use 800MHz and 2.6GHz on 1st March they have still to make them licence exempt so the public can legally use

So Ofcom are doing a consultation to allow this to happen. Well better late than never!

Consultation closes 10th May and they hope to make it legal by June.

So unless Ofcom turn a blind eye I dont think anyone will be able to use 800MHz or 2.6GHz until June.

Hmm interesting that's sound like a lot of bureaucratic rubbish.

There's discussion also of the intention to allow operators to refarm 2100 Mhz spectrum for LTE (2.17 - 2.20 in the main document).

Good find! Not only that, but general "technology neutrality" making it easier for operators to refarm at will.

Yeah Vodafone and Three want to re farm there's and honestly I can't see a reason behind it apart from fact they may want for IPhone 5's as no other phones actually run on the spectrum. I couldn't even see why apart from that Vodafone would even need. I expect Three want to use it as an alternative to 2600MHZ as while it's not quite as high it would still be useful to have three different spectrum of 4G like EE has. Problem they both having it won't be a standard spectrum for the UK so I expect a lot of phones won't be made to run on it.

Ironically there is another consultation about this relating to the Networks. This one relates to legislation about what conusmers are allowed to use. They love their consultations

Yeah I doubt we will hear anything finalized about these important things till Late May/Early June.

So this is what the networks have been waiting for? O2's Twitter support team have been tweeting "soon...so very soon" type teasers for the last week., which appears to tie up with news in the last week that they hoped to start roll-out by the end of June

Looking forward to the EE 800mhz roll out, does anyone know if they will only be using this in rural areas? Or will it be network wide?

They have only planned the network build to date (ie percentage of coverage and end date) using 1800 and the hyper rural project they have in cumbria with BT is still going to use 1800 so i guess 800 will only be used for seriously rural areas where they can't get any 4G 1800 coverage into.

There hasn't been any talk of 800 mast builds or roll outs that i have heard of. 1800 is far easier for them as most of the network already has the right antennas with very little planning permission needed.

It is unlikely they would use it on say motorway corridors or large rural villages as the spectrum they have wouldn't allow fast speeds in medium data busy situations.

Think Islands & small parts of hyper rural Ireland and Scottish highlands..

Networks have permission to roll out new spectrum to customers from July.

Will be interesting to see how quick they can roll out to catch up! When O2 has it's launch party, EE will be near to 60% 4G population coverage...
