This is horse racing...

Singular footballer Colin with crazy singer Helen.
Terrence Chant
11-09-2013
If crazy denotes an anagram and the singer is (Helen) Reddy, that could be rearranged to 'ddery' which leads me to think it could be Pat (or Paul) Eddery.

However I can't solve the rest if that is so....Singular is usually a 'bits and pieces' indicator for 'S' in cryptic clues....and as for the footballer Colin, Todd immediately sprung to mind although obviously there's lots of other options....
Mrs Mills
12-09-2013
Correct! The footballer is Colin Pates.

Mrs Mills

Well I can see an anagram of Gareth at the start so must be Gareth Bale!
Terrence Chant
09-10-2013
Yep! Full explanation:

'The rag' is scrambled to Gareth as you say, with 'nuts' as the anagram indicator

'Be on sale' with strange (another anagram indicator) ones = eons

Miss out i.e remove 'e o n s' from 'B e o n s a l e' leaves Bale

A winner has a bench (i.e cross)
Terrence Chant
10-10-2013
A winner = Victor

'a bench ie' is fodder scrambled by cross to make Anichebe
Mrs Mills
10-10-2013
Correct!
