I think my dog has it. Anyone know anything about it?

My older dog used to get it, if she got cold for any length of time.

Have to admit, I don't know what causes it, but it usually resolves itself.

There is a forum called dogsey I saw a thread about it the other day in the health section may be worth taking a look there.

It is usually cause by a dog jumping into a cold lake/river etc. The muscle tightens around the base of tail and causes a lot of pain. The vet can give pain killers - usually metacam - and it will normally resolve in a few days.

Is the dog a Lab/Retriever ? They're the worst for it.

She's a retriever and had been swimming the day before. Her tail was right down and she was miserable. We gave her an aspirin and kept her quiet. She's a lot better now and nearly back to normal.

Our dog gets it if he paddles in the sea when it is too cold. The first time I wasn't sure what was wrong, his tail was droopy and he seemed uncomfortable, and I really panicked thinking it was broken. The vet was very reassuring, and prescribed some painkillers, however it all cleared up within a few days. Luckily we didn't use all of the pain relief medication, so when it happened a second time we we well prepared!

It's basically a sprain of the tail muscles, a bit like we would get if we exercised without warming up first - at least that's how it was explained to me! Uncomfortable for the dog, but clears up within a few days.
