James makes number 20, only x factor act on the list, one direction isnt even on it well that proves to all the hates that he deserved to win the show could you imagine jarhamne or chris in the top 20 of all time? lol

Good for him.
No idea if it's the song, the fact that it's a charity single, or the fact that it's him, or the 3 together... but isn't it a great start anyway?

However, the true test will be when his original material comes out IMO.

I don't think 1D is a very good comparison: they used to only have original singles and are very polarizing: some people will not buy even a charity single because it's them... While others just love them. I don't think James is currently facing the issue to the same extend (he just has the X factor tag on his back to fight for certain music lovers).

.
It's basically his to become completely massive or completely throw away now. As much as I dislike James, Impossible was clearly a great song that people liked a lot: it won him plenty of radio support and loads of downloads, but new acts are only as good as their last release, and as you say, the true test is when he starts releasing his own material.

Well done to James. As someone said, it's a good start, looking forward to his own stuff.

Dont suppose he'll hold that position for long. Downloading is a fairly new phenomenon in the UK Charts and is increasingly the main purchase source. Suspect many will overtake fairly quickly.

With a cover................................
Yes turning the song into a hit and making it more popular than the original...yes that constitutes as complete annihilation.

It's the test of time now to see if he can actually produce decent original songs, instead of covers.

Id love to see you cover a song that sells over 1.3 million copys becoming best ever winners single.

Chart in the top 20 singles downloaded ever!

and for it to be number 1 for over 5-6 weeks.

Then you can comment until then dont question someone for not being an artist....

Single downloads have been included in the charts since 2005. I wouldn't call that either fairly new or a phenomenon.

James is the most unlikeable winner of a reality show possibly ever thats IMO.

I actually prefer james' own songs from the james arthur band than his cover version of impossible.

Nonetheless it's still a massive achievement for him! so well done!

Downloads are only 9 years old, that whole top 20 is made up of songs from the last 2-3 years, it'll probably be a completely new top 20 in the next 2-3 years.

Hooray - this is precisely the point I was making further up this thread.

The whole download thing is gaining momentum, whereas 2-3 years ago there were more singles sales. And given the number of record outlets that now no longer exist the market is likely to grow more.

The real point surely is that at least the song, however it is bought, has been a success, isn't it. It hasn't languished in the bottom of the charts and then speedily exited it.
