Cameras etc that take SD cards - Why can't you use Micro SD cards in adapters?

..With them?

Just curious really, the digital camera and video camera I've got both take SD cards, but when I tried to use a Micro SD card in a SD card adapter they wouldn't accept that. They are a fujifilm and a sony handycam. Yet I've not come across anything that reads SD cards not being able to read Micro SD cards in a SD adapter, so why do you think they can't be used in recorders/cameras too?

Wasn't sure which forum was most suitable for this question.

My Olympus camera takes SD cards - and quite happily reads micro-SD cards in adapters too. That's how I transfer pictures between my phone and my camera. Just use micros in both, but with an adapter in place when used in the camera.

Sounds like the problem is with your Fujifilm and/or Sony machines. Have you tried formatting the micro-SD cards prior to using them in the two pieces of equipment you have.

No I haven't tried that, they'll just be in FAT32, but so are the SD cards that the cameras use anyway. They can quite happily work also with SD cards that have other files on them too, it just plants its folder structure within them creating the DCIM folder etc. Interesting to hear that Micro SD cards in adapters sometimes DO work.

What capacity are the micro SD cards? I'm wondering if it is a SD SDHC compatibility issue?

Though this

https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/capacity/

seems to imply SD uses FAT16 and SDHC uses FAT32 so if that is the case and the cameras use FAT32 it does seem to suggest they are SDHC. As would being able to read full size SD cards over 2GB capacity.

I don't think it's a SDHC issue, it will read any size SD card (HC and even XC), it's just that the Micro SD slot doesn't read one when it's inserted.

Fairy 'nuff.

I recall a thread on DS a while ago where someone was having issues with SD cards that turned out to be trying to use SDHC in a reader that wasn't compatible. So seemed worth a punt.

Just out of interest have you tried another make of adapter? I know in theory they should all be more or less the same but stranger things have been known to happen

Are you sure that the adapter works? I have seen several faulty ones. MicroSD cards work fine in my camera - Panasonic Lumix.

My Canon DSLR and Sony Handycam both work fine with micro SD cards in an adapter.

My Canon camera has a micro SD card working in an adapter as well.

What size card are you trying to read and what model are the cameras?

Just a thought but I had an adapter that the read/write slider was loose and every time I inserted it the slider would move to read only..

I'm assuming of course that you tried it in a PC and it works.

Yes, the different sizes of SD card are electrically identical. They only vary in terms of the case size (and position of the electrical contacts) and the MicroSD->Full-Size adaptor is really just a plastic holder with bits of metal extending the contacts.

So as far as a camera (or whatever) is concerned, a MicroSD card in an adaptor should be indistinguishable from a full-size SD card.

However... this doesn't change the fact that certain cards have odd compatibility issues with some devices (nothing to do with their physical size). So you have to compare like with like (i.e. the fact that Obscuro-Brand's MicroSD card + adaptor doesn't work in your camera and a full-size SanDisk one does may well be because it's a rubbish/weird card, regardless of its physical size! )

Also, as has already been mentioned, an older device that only works with original-spec SD cards won't support cards over 2GB (i.e. SD-HC) regardless of their shape. Similarly, you need SD-XC support for cards over 32GB.

And, of course, the adaptor *could* be faulty!

Edit; one other thing- I *have* seen people insert the adaptors (which, of course, look like full-size SD cards) into the camera on their own with no MicroSD card inserted. This definitely won't work.
