YouView users may be interested to know that a mailing list has been set up to keep them informed about new software releases and other developments for YouView.

NB: The above site is a third party with no affiliation to YouView.

The cynic in me would suggest that the OP is the owner of the website in the link.

Yes of course.
This website is not selling anything.
It also makes quite clear that it is not connected with YouView.
It's been set up to try and improve communications about YouView, in particular with regards to TalkTalk.
If you look at the site it explains this.
At present there are changes to the YouView facilities that people are just not aware of.
For example the addition of subtitles to the BBC iPlayer.
If you were observant you might have spotted this when using it. But some people didn't spot it as evidenced by the TalkTalk forum.

This is not spam - it is a genuine attempt to offer a useful resource for YouView users.

But they all say that.

People might not have been so suspicious if you'd explained it all in your initial post, and if you'd also linked to the official Youview announcement and forum threads about software releases, for those like me who prefer to read such things at source.

Just saying, that you could have explained things a bit better from the outset. I'm sure your resource will be helpful to some people.

This is the first time I've posted on this forum.
I really wasn't anticipating that I needed to be defensive about this.
It does "what it says on the tin".

There is no way that I would expect any of the main YouView companies to officially endorse this, but there has been plenty of discussion about it on the YouView forum and there have been no adverse comments from the YouView official reps.

The prime motivation for setting it up was because I have repeatedly suggested to TalkTalk that when they release a software update they should email their customers to let them know what's happening. (This is obviously not so easy with Humax users but Talktalk obviously have an email address for everyone so for them it would be a simple task.)
They haven't responded to this suggestion so I thought I'd do it myself.

I intend to continue running the site and generating the email messages. This will obviously take time so if I'm going to do this I'd like it to be for as many people as possible - hence my attempt to publicise the mailing list on this forum.

Thanks for posting a positive response!
Hope you did the survey as well.
The results are not what I expected.

I signed up as soon as the original post appeared. Gwatuk has sent me a couple of updates on what is happening in the world of YouView, nothing else. It does exactly as stated in the original post. This is not a spam site, so please do not be cynical.

I know Gwatuk from another forum. There are SOME users there (who need to get a life), who complained about Gwatuks notification of this new extremely useful website being brought to their attention on that forum.

One (idiot ....) even went so far as to suggest he would report the website as a spamming website.

I find it amazing that so many people put the boot in for things like this when it has clearly been set up, with no little effort, to provide real benefits to YouView users. I registered as soon as it was set up, and expect to get a feed providing me with essential information that would take me MUCH longer to find, were this facility not available. So far I have received very few emails, and anticipate that far from being a problem, I will find it really useful.

Everyone has a choice - sign up (or don't - your choice...) - see if you get benefits from it - if not deregister. What's the problem here?

Thanks, Gwatuk - keep up the good work.

I'm really pleased to be able to say that response to the mailing list has been good.
Also the survey about new features is producing some really useful (and surprising) results.
Even if you are not interested in signing up to the mailing list, please do take a couple of minutes to do the survey.
We know that the results are being watched by YouView so this is a real chance to influence the way that YouView develops.

Your site shows various logo tradmarks including Youview, BT, Talktalk & Humax
This will give the impression that this site is supported by these companies.
As it states on your site these trade marks are copy right of the respective companies. If they have not endorsed your site how have you managed to use there trade marks?

The website is genuine, and very good too. YouView are also aware of it, as gwatuk openly informed them about it.

And they haven't got a problem with it.

Great idea but avoid clicking on the ads saying you've been selected to get a free iPhone. Signed up too.

Just completed the survey. Which then showed the results. Absolutely fascinating answers. And good questions, gwatuk.

Thanks for explaining.

People are naturally (and rightly) suspicious of new members in forums like this one due to the prevalence of troll posters and spammers, not all of whom are filtered out by Digital Spy. That's the only reason I said that an initial introduction from you would have been helpful but you've done that now, so thanks.

The only thing I am still puzzled by is the domain that your web link redirects to, which is talktalk.net. Is that because they act as hosts for anyone with a talktalk account, free webspace?

Looks like it will be a good resource though, I have to say.

Not at all surprising given the way the survey is structured.

Yes that's right - free webspace (and I'm a beginner at this stuff).
I suppose the danger is that if we publish anything too critical of TalkTalk they could always pull the plug.

There is now a second survey about new features for YouView.
Please see www.youviewupdate.co.uk if you wish to contribute to this.
