Has anybody else noticed this?

I went into an Asda SuperStore the other week, the first time i've been in this branch and although it was a SuperStore I noticed that there wasn't a Over-The-Counter Curry Counter which i've seen in most Asda's. I thought this was unusual considering it was a SuperStore and you would have thought it would have had one.

Anyway, today I go into my local Asda branch and have found that they have removed their Indian Counter too! I was in the store last Friday and it was definitly there but now it has gone. They still have the pre-packed Indian Curry's. Does anyone know why they're getting rid of them? Saying that, the last few times i've got a curry from there there is never a member of staff serving on that counter. I've been waiting up to 10 minutes on some occasions.

i'm quite dissapointed to be honest if they are removing the Indian Curry Counters from Asda as I LOVE the Indian Lamb Rogan Josh that they do over-the-counter (although they have recently started adding those horrible green seedy things to it). For some reason they don't do the Lamb Rogan Josh as a pre-packed item (they did to it a couple of years back).

If you want your indian curry satisfaction to continue,go to your local indian? Only because the curry counters in ASDA are being removed doesnt mean its the end of the world.

The green seedy things are cardamom pods. They do infuse a nice flavour but i don't find them too pleasant if i accidentally chew on one!

Sorry, I can't help with the Asda question as I don't shop there. I had no idea they sold over the counter curries, seems like a good idea but presumably the amount they sell doesn't warrant the amount of space it takes up in store. A shame for you and other fans.

I'm learning how to make curries at the moment, I always thought it would be really difficult but it's not (as long as i follow the recipe!) and some of the results are lovely!

Our counters have gone, but still the same products on sale in the same dishes, they are just on a shelf which is directly in the place of the old counter. Seems like they just fill the dishes up in the back now and do self serve basically.

Listen you nasty little troll, i've noticed a lot of your 'sarcastic' replies to people on these forums and I suggest you get a life. Perhaps I don't like Indian's from a Takeaway, Perhaps I prefer the Asda Lamb Rogan Josh because it tastes different to the others.

Their curries are far better quality than any of my local takeaways - the hottest don't even remotely invite bum gravy! Quite a remarkable feat.

Metro Centre Asda one is still there (well it was last week), you normally do not see that many people buying them although there is always lots of people buying the choose you own topping pizzas next to the curry counter. I tried a couple of the curries and they were OK, the madras was not very hot and the nan was poor but still good value compared to Indian takeaways. I have tried lots of supermarket nan breads over the years but you cannot beat a freshly cooked Indians nan imo. The Asda pizzas are cracking value, especially the large American Sizzler £3.50.

I think Asda are seriously cutting costs with their curries. I shop online with Asda and not too long ago they had king prawn and lamb choices now it seems to be just chicken. Their king prawn bhuna was very nice.

What i've noticed that apart from prawn and veggie they only offer chicken curries. No, lamb, beef or pork.

I've wondered if it's because of cost, the fact that chicken is an allrounder filler meat or if there are religious aspects.


I might ask next time i'm in why they only offer chicken.

OP - I've noticed this in my nearest Asda stores. Which is a pity, because we liked the chicken tikka samosas, and other different items that you couldn't buy pre-packed.

That said, at our Asda stores, the Indian/Chinese takeaway counters were never really busy so I guess that's one way to cut costs.

Mine offers lamb, beef, chicken, prawn etc. I suppose it all depends on sales - perhaps chicken is a big seller in your area wheras the others just aren't?

I think it's a bit on the touchy side. No offence to the OP but supermarket curry from the curry counter - ugh.

I noticed the curry-counter was removed from our local (Edinburgh, Chesser) Asda recently. It always seemed busy enough and the other local supermarkets seem to be sticking with their curry counters.

Where I live doesn't have a large ethnic community so I didn't really think of the regious reasoning.

I'm mostly thinking cost because there's no reason why people wouldn't like beef, lamb or pork.

A chicken madras just doesn't sound right. For me it should be lamb or beef. Same as some other dishes should not be chicken (no problem to have the option if you prefer chicken).
Pork vindaloo is another example.


I would assume that beef is probably the top seller in the region historically.

My local ASDA'a curry counter shares it's place with the pizza counter - if this were to go i'd be gutted as for just £3.58 you can get a 14" stonebake pizza with 4 toppings of your choice - tewwific vawue!

My local Asda has a halal butcher concession in it - great for getting mutton for my own curries
But I do like Asdas' lamb rogan josh - there are times when you want a curry in a hurry after all.

The Asda I work in doesn't have a curry counter or a make your own pizza counter, I was gutted when I found out. The reason we don't have a pizza counter is because one area stores always make a loss is on the pizza counter. I'm not sure if this is true with the curry counter, but its an idea

I was in yesterday and spotted two beef options. There was a beef madras and a beef & black bean sauce.
Just one of each though whereas the rest of the shelf was full of chicken options.

the ruby murrys at adsa usually taste powdery so i dont think its a bad thing

The Chinese and Indian counters have just gone in my ASDA too, and been replaced with prepacked microwave portions. They seem to be overhauling their chilled produce lines throughout, so this is probably part of it.
