Sound from TV to amp lost, only on certain programmes

I have a Panasonic plasma TV (TX-P42ST50B, bought in January this year), the sound from which is taken from the digital audio out socket on the rear of the set, via a CYP digital audio to stereo converter and a pair of phono leads, to line inputs on my amplifier. Last night I switched on the TV to watch "Later" on Freeview HD, and there was no sound being output to the amp; as soon as "Later" ended and the trailer for a programme on BBC3 started, the sound was back, and it was fine for the start of the film after that. There was sound from the TV speakers during "Later". Does anyone know what might cause the sound not to be output to the converter only on some programmes?

I also watched Later on Freeview HD last night and there was no problem with the sound via my connection to my stereo pre-amp from the TV 3.5mm headphone socket using the lead/coupler combo shown below. Your TV also has a 3.5mm headphone socket on the side of the TV (according to the Panasonic spec) and I think you should use that instead of the Digital Out. Freeview-HD uses aac audio which may be in 5.1. At a guess the audio converter works OK with stereo and can't cope with 5.1.

Freeview HD can have surround sound audio tracks. This could be converted into Dolby Digital format to feed a surround sound system. If that happens any digital to analogue converter such as the CYP device won't have a clue what to do with the digital signal it's getting.

What you need to do is either find an analogue output - which could be available on a SCART socket as well as a headphones socket - or see if the TV can be persuaded to output LPCM from the digital out all the time.

Thank you for the replies. I'll look into the option of using the output from the headphone socket, as you suggest.

Personally I would follow "chrisjr" advice.
Leave the digital connection and CYP connected and simply changed the digital output option on the TV from AUTO to PCM.
Worked fine when I did this with a CYP convertor and a LG 32LK330U TV / Sharp SB250 soundbar.

Thanks, Greyowl. I did find a setting in the TV menu to change the output to PCM, so I'll see if that resolves the problem.
