Interesting, what is the point of doing that I wonder. I mean with such a huge audience you'd think there'd be plenty of shots to choose from people who actually saw that particular audition

They must have needed that exact shot for that moment. It's not unusual for audience reaction shots to be taken from any time at any venue and pasted where the producers want.
They have to cross cut all the time to make the show reasonably watchable and almost believable.
It could be worse, they could resort to canned laughter like some of the incredibly unfunny comedy shows that are shown regularly. ITV is bad and BBC is worse.
