Possibly the largest chain of bakeries in the UK, but until last week I'd never tried one.

I thought that it was about time to give it a go and went into my local one in the hope of buying a pasty. There weren't any available so I purchased a steak slice and also shared a sausage roll with my son. I was disappointed with the selection and also with the product, very poor, I expected a lot more.

Yes they are over rated.

You can't beat an independent bakery, especially ones that sell proper cream cakes with real cream.

I usually prefer savoury to sweet, but yes, independent bakeries are probably better. Living in North London I like the Turkish Bakeries in Green Lanes Haringey, they sell some fantastic stuff.

I'd probably bought the odd cake in greggs but I'd never tried their main stuff of pasties etc..............until a new one opened near me last year

I had a pasty whilst out shopping...........

It was OK, actally a bit better than that...............it wasn't very hot though and it had peas in it

I've never seen a pasty with peas in.........made me wonder if they just shoved any leftovers in there.............

I haven't been in again since but i will sometime..........

I like the sausage rolls. I also like the chicken bakes. I'm really craving a sausage roll now.

I remember when it was called Braggs and you could get a pasty about 5 times the size of the ones you get now for 50p.

I had a chicken tikka pasty and steak bake a couple of years ago from Greggs and they were pathetic.

I'd say that there was about a half a teaspoon of actual meat in the steak bake and even less in the chicken tikka pasty.

They were nothing like the big, puffy things filled with ingredients that Braggs sold.

Shh.............but I like the Ginsters range of pasties, bakes and sausage rolls

The pasties are huge compared to greggs and they're on special off every other week.............you can get them for a pound

the steak sice bakes are good and the giant sausage rolls

The steak bake I had was made with greasy puff pastry. I ate it because I was hungry but really wish they would have had something with shortcrust instead.

Can't beat a Greggs. As for using your local bakery instead, what's one of them?

Greggs is ok. No frills pasties and cheap sandwiches too. I've never been impressed with their cakes range though. Overfilled with icing sugar most of them. I'm sure the Sarnies ar full of salt too luckily I don't go in very often. Once every 6 months when I fansy a change from home made lunches

A North East institution. The ham and pease pudding sandwich is a thing of beauty.

The sausage rolls are legendary, I like the Cornish pasties too

Beware the corned beef pastie, they can sometimes be hotter than the sun and cause serious injury.

I love Greggs....very rarely do I go into town and not go in there for something

I also get the frozen Greggs stuff from Iceland, for when I don't go into town

I find that the pasties, sausage rolls and pies so greasy, to the point that I was eating one and took a bite and vomited in the shop.

Lol yea they have all been take over by 'Hannahs' now....

Sausage rolls from Greggs or Hannahs are amazing IF you get them at the right time! That is when they haven't been sitting around for ages!

I've never been in one. I think what puts me off are the people stood outside shovelling pastry into their mouths with crumbs all down the front of their clothes.

Greggs is not too bad but I wish that they could keep the pasties hot. A cold Cornish or Steak Bake is not nice on a wintery day.

A TV documentry series called Greggs; More Than Meats The Pie, or something similar, starts on Sky in a week or two. Might be worth a look.

Years ago the Greggs up here used to sell nice chicken pies but they are long gone. I reckon the pasties in the 80s/90s were about 50% bigger than they are now. I still really like the cheese pasties when they have just been baked and are nice and hot. The steak bakes are very average, you can get better at the local bakeries around here, cheaper too.
