Pastry is something I've avoided making as I stupidly thought it was beyond me.

Today, to stop myself from going mad with boredom, I decided to make a cheese and onion pie. Not a bad first attempt.

However, the pastry stuck to the rolling pin at any opportunity. My rolling pin is a plain*wooden cylindrical shape, no handles.

Would I have more success with one made from something else?

I have a vague recollection that flour stops pastry sticking to the rolling pin, is this true?

I had to flour the wooden rolling pin with nearly every roll.
Bizarrely the flour wouldn't stick half as well as the pastry did.

The best ones are the ones that stay cold. I used to have a really old glass one but my mum used to use an old glass milk bottle. It's still best to put a little flour on it though to stop sticking.

I think, on reflection that the pastry was probably a tad too wet.

It seemed Ok to me, but when I mentioned to my mum that it cracked around the edges really easily as I rolled, and it sucked up all the flour I put on the rolling pin, AND it had a soggy bottom, I reckon I need a drier consistency next time.

I have a polystyrene one which is sealed at one end and has a screw cap at the other - it can be filled with cold water. Though I've never used it like that.
