The pit pony in (I think it was called) Escape from the Dark.

Oh and Mij the otter in Ring of Bright Water.

Bloody hell! You'll have me in tears in a moment - I've thought of another - the Kestrel Kes in Kes.

All of these ten fold.

I adore RoBW. I have 16 different copies of the book (and two tattoos)

Bull's Eye (Bill Sikes's dog) in Oliver! Just because of that dog scene alone, I avoid watching all Oliver Twist adaptations since.

Phar Lap. The horse's fate was a total downer.

The hounds in Where the Red Fern Grows.

King Kong. The treatment of him, and his eventual fate, in the Jessica Lange & Fay Wray versions left me depressed, so I haven't bothered watching any King Kong film since.

The white horse in The Neverending Story. It has to be the worst way to die. Way to go with inflicting that scene on us kids, you sadistic bastards.

Yeah, I'm not that crazy about seeing animals suffering or dying in films. I know it's only fiction, but still.

Artex in The Neverending Story. One of my favourite films as a kid but that scene always destroyed me.

For me it's a toss up between Mufasa and the dog from I Am Legend (Samantha?).

Robert Bresson's Au hasard Balthazar is about the life of a maltreated donkey. The closing minutes are unsurpassably sad.

It's an insect, but I always found the ant dying in Honey I Shrunk The Kids very upsetting when I was younger.

My dog skip
Makes me bawl. Can't remember whether you see him die or if it's mentioned, but leaves you sad either way

Agreed. I hate stuff like that. Good film, though.

Dog (the actual name of the dog) in 'Big Jake'.

The Trog in 'Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger'.

Snowmane (Theoden's horse) in 'Return of the King'.

The daughter's pony in 'Gone With the Wind'.

Tarka the otter.

The two dogs shot while making their way home in 'Dean Spanley'.

However, going off topic........ For me the most upsetting animal death in any media takes place in a novel, namely Algernon in 'Flowers For Algernon'. I know it was adapted to a movie version, but I haven't actually seen it.

Got to be Mufasa! I cried my eyes out when I first saw it. My daughter went through a phase of watching The Lion King every day. It was over a week before I could watch it without sobbing. I think I'm desensitised to it now after watching a million times.
