Kirk from CS is a a prime example, he's been there for 10+ years and is yet to have a meaningful storyline.

Most people have a mix of comedy and drama in their lives so soaps should reflect this. Characters like Ronnie and little Mo got misery afte misery, whilst Fatboy just continually gets terrible storylines which means nothing to anyone.

Also, I'd like that pain in the arse Kim to get some misery in her life.

Corrie had more comedy in the old days - Stan and Hilda, Jack and Vera, Fred, Blanche etc

Dot and Ethel in EE were a good double act too.

You've got to have somewhere there capable of giving us a good laugh, the likes of Blanche etc are priceless

I agree about Kim in EE .

This supposedly funny cretin needs to be lowered into an industrial shredder . It would make great TV

I prefer it when soaps have characters who can do a funny scene but are also good at dramatic stuff. I don't like comedy characters or comedy storylines. In Emmerdale, characters like Val, Cain, Charity, Nikhil, Pollard, Bernice, Sam and Betty can all make me smile (even laugh out loud sometimes) and all but Bernice get serious storylines as well.

Nikhil and the birth app on his mobile when Gennie was giving birth was hilarious. Another one that stands out was when Cain has just found his sick father lost on the moors, has called the rescue services, and the two have been air lifted to hospital. The family are hassling Cain to find out what's wrong with Zak. He gets fed up and says 'I don't know, I'm not a doctor, ask me another!' and his brother Sam, who is learning disabled, pipes up with 'What was it like in the helicopter?'

Emmerdale need a few more comedy moments like this, built into the serious storylines at the moment.

I totally agree. Deirdre in CS is brilliant as delivering one liners but isn't actually a comedy character. A while ago they seemed to be trying to make Gail funny but that really didn't work.

I know, I don't watch Corrie so much as I used to, but that Mary really annoys me. Given a decent storyline, she might be a good character, but all she has is rubbishy so-called comedy stories. Compare her to Jack, who could do the whole range.

I wouldn't watch a soap without comedy.
I don't watch Eastenders.

I love comedy characters tbh. Kirk and Beth are the two that get me chuckling in Coronation Street. I like having characters that don't just have misery after misery.

That's kind of my point. I think it makes a character more 3 dimensional if they have both comedic and sympathetic storylines. Grant in EE had lots of funny lines, and I think that's one of the main reasons why the character was so succesful, not just a hardman who has no other traits other than he's hard.

I think it is important to have comedy relief. It livens things up and prevents soaps from being so self-serious.
