acceptable video format for DMR-EX78 via usb input?

Hi all,
I have some video in the form of .avi files that I want to watch through. I hate watching stuff on my pc, I'm a telly, sofa (and cup tea) kind of guy. The DMR-EX78 wouldn't recognise the portable HDD drive I tried connecting to it. I didn't have a USB memory stick handy yesterday, so I tried inserting an SD card in the slot on the side of my Panasonic TV. No joy, even after I converted the files to mp4.

Looking through my manuals I've seen mention of mpeg2 .mov and Divx filetypes which "may" work. Has anybody had any experience with this, and are there any conversion utilities that are recommended?

Hi, mp4 only now works on the newer machines in the 264 format, I use divx and standard download format, any files that won't work I transfer to a readable standard using freemake video conveter which is free to download, transfer to tv quality. You can't watch a program on a usb stick if you're making a recording.
