Quad core v Dual core on a tablet

I am buying a new tablet (have already posted) and want it mainly for checking email, web surfing, ebook, but not gaming. Because I won't be using it a lot, I don't want to be spending £500 or more, rather £250-£350ish. I am now considering the lenovo ideapad - quad core, and samsungs galaxy tab - dual core - and note - quad core. Is there much of a visible difference if I'm not gaming, in the quad/dual core tablets? I've had varying opinions, so any input will help. thanks.

Do you intent running and flash websites?

My Galaxy Tab2 struggles with certain flash content viewed through the browser

dual or quad makes no difference in itself. only in as much as it speaks to the power of the processor.

Other than gaming i wouldn't expect there to be an issue. i have a computer less powerful than my tablet and that seems to manage.

Having Quad Core on a tablet seems like overkill.

You could get something like the galaxy note 10.1 which has a quad core for £350. Personally I am more like you in my usage. I go on the Web, check my emails and watch videos. I do play games occasionally but these are simple things like angry birds. For my usage a dual core is more than fine.

You say that but to me it makes a big difference on my Nexus 7. The gaming experience is fantastic and much improved thanks to quad core.

Octocores are coming.

Not really. The only 8 core chip at the moment has two quad cores. One for low powered activities, and another for demanding tasks. It can't use all 8 at once.

People get very excited about the number of cores. But it is not a measure of power.

@OP For your stated requirements you will be fine on a dual core. You should note however that the next version of Android is rumoured to require quad core at a minimum - an announcement is expected at Google I/O (although its a good bet as the Nexus line apart from the 10 has a quad core).

Personally I would go quad core as this will provide greater longevity than dual core but each to their own.

But only gaming is improved. General browsing - near as makes no difference.

Even then the Nexus 7 can be a bit underpowered, it really does need to be overclocked to get some games running fine - Real Racing 2 can only be run on low/medium quality. Set it to high quality and it crawls on the Nexus 7.

Very true.

The S4 is only faster as the 4 "primary" cores are just plain, er, faster - not down to it being an 8 core device.

Well that is true. but compare it to PC's, a rig that will let you run the latest games like crysis 3 on the highest details would cost 3 grand or more likely not be purchased for a couple of years.
