i inherited a whardfdale W42S40PE plasma tv about 12 months ago.the pic quality is suberb.i have googled this model on the internet but the reviews i can find state its not hd.

Why does it have ports at the back for hdmi cables if it isnt capable of hd resolution pictures?

Thanks in advance

Are you sure you've got the right model number? I have found specs on the interweb that show that model is 852x480 pixel resolution (so not even UK SD resolution!) and no mention at all of HDMI sockets. Just bog standard SCART and a PC socket, which may well be VGA, though that isn't specified.

You say "the picture quality is superb" and it works fine with your Sky box, well that's all that matters so just enjoy it.

The HDMI connection and supporting the HD resolutions is there for compatibility, even though the TV is not HD it is as you've discovered very convenient that it supports the interface.

Because HDMI is perfectly capable of carrying SD signals as well as HD. Just like component is.

Yes and in the OPs case it appears that the TV though not HD will still accept the HD signals even though it can't display HD (it is possible the OPs Sky has been set to 576 but probably not).

To Andy: It's just convenience, why would you not want the TV to have HDMI, it's not all about displaying HD.
