1. Ofcom has granted permission for Digital One Ltd to extend its national radio multiplex, currently serving England, Scotland and Wales, to Northern Ireland. It comes after a consultation on the matter which 18 people replied, all of which apart from one were supportive of Digital One’s request. More

2. Clive Dickens has spoken out about the future of radio in the UK, citing digital radio as the game changer for commercial radio. Austereo’s new Director of Digital and Innovation encourages the UK industry to embrace digital, pointing out the major change in use of spectrum from FM, where the BBC dominates, to DAB where commercial radio owns most of the space. Clive suggests the BBC’s majority listenership may be down to the corporation’s majority spectrum space. “The BBC has 70% of analogue spectrum and they get 60% of audience,” he says. “We have spent so many years arguing about digital but if we get this right over the next 10 years, it could be the game changer for commercial radio. Full Details

3. Switchdigital Scotland is investing in the future of DAB in Scotland by asking for broadcasters to join them on their multiplex. New slots will become available from July and Switchdigital invites commercial radio broadcasters, community radio stations, student radio and even online services to get in touch with them. Full DetailsCommunity station 99.8FM KCC Live has teamed up with Knowsley Community College to deliver a free, nationally recognised qualification in radio. Set to launch in September 2013, this BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production (Radio) will offer a unique opportunity in gaining the essential skills required for a career in radio and a qualification equivalent to A Levels that will get you ready for a place on a University course. The course mixes theory elements with much needed practical hands-on experience delivery, and project work from 99.8FM KCC Live, a professional Sony Academy recognised model for community radio with young people in Merseyside that has over 50,000 listeners every week. 1. Earlier this week, BT criticised Sky for declining to carry ads for its forthcoming TV sports channels on Sky Sports. In fact, we’ve offered to carry BT Sport ads on all of our other channels but we think it’s absolutely reasonable for Sky Sports not to promote a direct rival. This is actually normal practice across the media industry and, in spite of its comments about Sky, BT itself refuses to carry our ads on its websites Full Details

2. The UK market for content on demand services across digital films, TV and music is reaching saturation point, according to findings from YouGov's first Content on Demand survey. YouGov found that nearly half (48%) of the online population in the UK have used digital catch-up TV services in the last three months. The most popular services are BBC iPlayer (56%), YouTube (9%), Virgin Tivo (6%) and Sky Sports (6%), according to the results. More

3. Sky Movies customers able to enjoy exclusive access to hit films including Silver Linings Playbook in HD, on demand and on the move, alongside a wide range of classic titles. Sky continues to strengthen its leadership in movie content by agreeing a new multi-year deal with the UK’s leading independent film distribution company, Entertainment Film Distributors, to bring Sky Movies customers exclusive access to hit movies including The Master, Silver Linings Playbook, Beautiful Creatures and The Host, alongside a wide range of classic titles. More

4. Although admitting that digital content ownership ecosystem UltraViolet was of interest to Sky as a means of continuing to make its movie content more widely available to its customers, Ian Lewis, BSkyB’s Director of Sky Movies and Sky Box Office has suggested that it is not yet ready for deployment by the satellite broadcaster. Speaking at the PEVE Entertainment 2013 conference in London, Lewis said: “If it takes me four to five minutes to explain to my CEO, it’s not ready for the public. That’s four minutes more than you get to convince consumers.” According to Lewis, UltraViolet was “not quite there yet” and needed needs to be simpler and more customer-focused. More

5. News Corp’s new name for its broadcast and entertainment division is 21st Century Fox. Murdoch’s planned spin-off of the publishing side of the business will retain the News Corp moniker. More

6. According to Giles Cottle, Head of Strategy at UK free-to-air digital satellite Freesat, the emergence of live online TV service Aereo in the US raises some interesting propositions from a service point of view. With Aereo currently in the midst of a legal battle with the network broadcasters who allege copyright infringement, Cottle, writing in the Freesat blog, says: “We’ll leave the legal ramifications of the case to the experts, but we think Aereo throws up some interesting propositions from a service point of view. More

7. Virgin Media has won a victory against fledgling rival YouView, getting its launch TV and press campaign banned after the advertising watchdog ruled that claims it is "unique" and the "easiest" service were untrue. After a protracted development period, YouView launched last summer. It was backed with a £10m ad campaign that debuted in September, featuring stars including Gary Barlow and Benedict Cumberbatch. The service is a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Arqiva, BT and TalkTalk to bring internet-connected TV to Freeview households. More

8. Ofcom has announced its intention to implement major changes to how telephone numbers are charged, which will make the cost of calling businesses and services clearer for consumers. Under rules which Ofcom today confirmed it expects to introduce, consumers will pay a single ‘access charge’ to their phone company for calls to ‘non-geographic’ numbers, plus a ‘service charge’ to the company or organisation they are calling. More

9. Rob Norman and Jon Miller have been appointed non-executive directors of BBC Global News Ltd, which owns and operates the BBC’s commercially funded global 24-hour news channel BBC World News and bbc.com/news. Norman is the chief digital officer of GroupM Worldwide and Miller the co-founder of Fuel Media Capital. They will join the boards of directors of BBC Global News Ltd, which includes the director of global news Peter Horrocks and CEO Jim Egan. More

10. YouGov’s first Content on Demand study has found that nearly half (48%) of the online population in the UK have used digital catch-up services in the last three months. The most popular were BBC iPlayer (56%), followed by YouTube (9%), Virgin TiVo (6%) and Sky Sports (6%).On the other hand, the study, which assesses the market every six months, has found that the potential new audience for content on demand services is limited. Indeed, of those who currently do not use catch-up, 79% are unlikely to access catch-up TV in the next 12 months, with only 7% saying will do so. More

11. Freeview viewers in parts of Scotland will need to retune their TV equipment on 17th April as local airwaves are cleared for the roll-out of 4G mobile broadband. Changes to transmitters serving parts of Angus, Dundee, Perth and Fife, the south west Highlands and Islands and viewers in the Scottish Borders will free up frequencies for the future introduction of 4G. Around 300,000 homes will be affected. Full Details

12. Free-to-air instrumental music channel LandscapeHD has launched what it describes as a “revolutionary” new technology for modern television delivery. Designed to avoid prohibitively expensive broadcast costs that inhibit the growth of niche music television channels, the new generation server can deliver a highest quality 1080p television signal (in an 8Mb or 10Mb feed) into any telecoms, cable or traditional television system without the need for satellite or streaming. 13. Just in case you missed it ... here are a few select sections from Ofcom Annual plan 2013/14 that refer to free-to-air TV in the UK: In the light of the conclusions of our UHF strategy work we will prioritise the release of the 600 MHz band for interim use by additional DTT multiplexes, PMSE services and applications based on white space device technology. To enable this we will progress the award of one or more DTT multiplexes (using DVB-T2 and MPEG-4 standards) in the 600 MHz band. Given that this spectrum could be needed to facilitate 700 MHz release as early as 2018, and hence the window for interim use may be relatively limited, we will be looking to award the spectrum as soon as practicable. We also intend to conduct further work on the precise arrangements for the coexistence of PMSE equipment and WSDs in the 600 MHz band. Full Details

14. Barely has the dust settled on the first round of local TV licences than media regulator Ofcom has set a deadline on 24th April for expressions of interest for the next phrase of small-scale services. Following the award of 19 local TV licences in phase one, the regulator has asked for expressions of interest for 30 new locations from Aberdeen to Barnstaple, including Stratford-upon-Avon, Middlesbrough and York. The areas comprise 28 proposed towns suggested by Comux, the multiplex operator, as well as further appeals for interest in Swansea and Plymouth which did not attract bids in the previous round. 15. Dolby Laboratories and Royal Philips Electronics in association with CAMERON | PACE Group (CPG) announced at NAB in Las Vegas that they have signed an agreement to integrate the Dolby 3D format into CPG’s 3D video content production workflow and to collaborate on the use of the Dolby 3D format. All parties believe that glasses-free 3D presentation in the home can be improved by delivering premium-quality autostereoscopic 3D content using the Dolby 3D format. MIPTV 2013 – Cannes. With Sony screens across the Palais and two conference sessions, there was no escaping 4K UltraHD. SES jumped at the opportunity to announce the launch of its SES Ultra HD Experience initiative, which invites content providers and broadcasters to work with SES to support the development of the Ultra HD value chain. “You’re not alone. We are here today to say to you: let’s work together,” said Norbert Hoelzle, SVP, commercial Europe, SES, during Wedensday’s 4K session. “Let’s be the catalyst for industry and get the Ultra HD train rolling. The same way we HD started ten years ago, in an industry-wide effort, let’s start Ultra HD today.” More

The BBC has told London’s ‘Future TV’ summit that viewers are less and less enthusiastic about watching programming in 3D. The BBC’s technology guru Andy Quested, said the BBC had been an excited supporter of 3D broadcasting but that each time a new 3D show was televised, the audience ‘spike’ got lower. Quested’s comments come at the end of a two-year test of 3D at the BBC and include top-rated output such as the BBC’s flagship Strictly Come Dancing, natural history blockbuster Walking with Dinosaurs and comedy show Mr Stink, as well as last year’s London Olympic Games which transmitted dozens of events in 3D. The news is all the more disappointing given that the potential audience for 3D in the UK has expanded considerably, to around 1.5 million homes, over the past two years. More

Broadcasters have further work to complete on Ultra High Definition Television before it can enter the broadcast mainstream, according to the EBU’s head of media fundamentals & production. Speaking at the SMPTE Annual Technical Conference in Hollywood Hans Hoffmann said the interfaces needed for programme production and for connections in domestic equipment both needed attention. The new family of compression technologies, HEVC will be published shortly, but much testing remains to be done. More.

DMAX is staying at ch144, Challenge moves to ch145

Presumably DMAX+1 becomes TLC+1 on ch195 and DMAX+2 becomes ID+1 in the documentaries genre.

206 is already iTV4 +1

No, that's incorrect.

Per SPI website:

"DMAX+1 (currently 145) moves to the bottom of Entertainment"

But yes, TLC+1 will be on 195.

So where will DMAX on Channel Number 195 go, at the bottom of the Entertainment Genre as well?

EDIT: Answered on Thread #5, but some Posters on here are saying that ITV4 is at that position, so either ITV4 moves or the DMAX channel will have to go elsewhere

DMAX+2 on ch195 is most likely a place holder channel, so with TLC+1 launching on ch195, it would suggest DMAX+2 will become TLC+1

No, that's incorrect.

Per SPI website:

"DMAX+1 (currently 145) moves to the bottom of Entertainment"

But yes, TLC+1 will be on 195.
It's looking something like this-

'Entertainment'

125 TLC HD
144 Discovery Max
145 Challenge
195 TLC+1
238 Discovery Max+1
239 Discovery Max+2
290 TLC

'Lifestyle & Culture'

240 Discovery Home & Health
241 Discovery Home & Health +1
242 Discovery Shed

'Documentaries'

520 Discovery Channel HD
521 Discovery Channel+1
522 Investigation Discovery
523 Animal Planet HD
524 Discovery Turbo
525 Discovery Science
535 Discovery History
536 Discovery History+1
549 Animal Planet +1
551 Investigation Discovery+1
557 Discovery Science+1
561 Discovery Channel
562 Animal Planet

Note 1: We don't know where the 'ID+1' EPG slot is coming from yet, 'Discovery Travel & Living' could become 'ID+1'.

Note 2: The fact that 'ID' has moved above 'Animal Planet HD' must mean that 'ID HD' is on it's way.

It's looking something like this-

'Entertainment'

125 TLC HD
144 Discovery Max
145 Challenge
195 TLC+1
238 Discovery Max+1
239 Discovery Max+2
290 TLC

'Lifestyle & Culture'

240 Discovery Home & Health
241 Discovery Home & Health +1
242 Discovery Shed

'Documentaries'

520 Discovery Channel HD
521 Discovery Channel+1
522 Investigation Discovery
523 Animal Planet HD
524 Discovery Turbo
525 Discovery Science
535 Discovery History
536 Discovery History+1
549 Animal Planet +1
551 Investigation Discovery+1
557 Discovery Science+1
561 Discovery Channel
562 Animal Planet

Note 1: We don't know where the 'ID+1' EPG slot is coming from yet, 'Discovery Travel & Living' could become 'ID+1'.

Note 2: The fact that 'ID' has moved above 'Animal Planet HD' must mean that 'ID HD' is on it's way.
So what is going to happen with the two RealTime channels, are they going off the air and be shut down?

And why has Sky closed the SD launch queue at a time when they are many SD channels that are going to be appearing soon - as above?

The SD launch queue closure is basically because old SD boxes can't handle any more channels. New SD channels replace other channels. Yes the RealTime channels are closing to make way for TLC.

Except new TLC is chasing a completely different demographic than the old TLC. Probably why Discovery is treating it as a new channel launch rather than a return of TLC after so many years.

Can someone confirm whether the encryption flag on 8900 on TP62 (11023H) is off despite it being encrypted? Anyone able to open this yet?

The much anticipated local DAB digital radio transmitters for the Wrexham,
Chester and Liverpool areas have been switched on this morning in Wales.
The new multiplexes were officially launched at an event at Wrexham Football Ground
with local politicians Ian Lucas MP and Lesley Griffiths AM helping to press the button.
The switch-on means that 2.2 million people in North East Wales, West Cheshire and Liverpool
can now listen to BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, Real Radio Wales, Nation Radio, Juice FM and Dee on DAB on DAB digital radio for the first time. More

Anyone else noticed on the Parental control panel on HD boxes there is now a SHARING option.
Apparently you can share the contents of your hard drive as long as you are on the same network
