one more difference, westlife song in their earlier years were just epic the best! not trashy like today's..

Oh no, don't even try to compare Shane with 1D - I honestly think 1D are at the stage where they could have released a song of them whistling and it would have huge sales.
One thing we also need to consider is that Shane is starting his career after being 14 years in Westlife - they were hugely popular in the heydays but it is completely normal that this kind of intensity decreased of the years - what I mean by that is, had Shane started his career back in 2004 like Brian did, I'm sure that no.1 would be guaranteed as Westlife still had the hype. So it is normal that It is a little harder for Shane right now.
And I completely agree with your comment I bolded. Like I said the other day: the social media certainly helped 1D to become popular around the world - there is no need for heavy travelling abroad when the fans spread the word for you - Youtube and Twitter are gold for singers these days. Since this isn't about 1D, I'm sure no one will jump on me here when even go this far and say that they probably wouldn't have cracked America without the social media.
And of course I agree with your last comment - westlife never had such juvenile and immature songs like Kiss you, Live While We're Young or Best Song Ever. Everybody can say what they want about Westlife but at least 3-4 songs of theirs are and will be remembered, I think these are Flying Without Wings, World Of Our Own, When You're Looking Like That, as well as their versions of You Raise Me Up and Uptown Girl because I hear those versions more than originals on radios today. However, I would also add I'll See You Again even if it wasn't a single - that song touched so many people, certainly not just WL fans. Just look at this video:

It has 5 million views and people are writing comments every day! - the last comment was just 4 hours ago.
So far it looks like 1D on the other hand will be remembered only for the huge hit What Makes You Beautiful. It will stay that way if they don't mature their sound.
This is slightly OT but I'm sure you won't mind as we are all WL/Shane fans
