I've been waiting for sky Atlantic or any other channel to show it from the beginning again but nothing. I'm not one of those who buys a DVD box set without having seen anything of show but I'm thinking I might have to buy the box set from amazon, it's only 49.99.

I want to ask is it really really worth it??, I have heard its a great show and heard not one person say a bad word about it, I mean its called the greatest tv show ever isn't it and trust me i don't doubt it.
I'm not precious into the tv I watch, my fav shows include friends, ally mcbeal, lost, desperate housewives, dexter, true blood, 30 rock. So I like a variety of shows, will i enjoy enjoy this?

One thing is it a really dark show and I don't mean drama wise. But dark as is in six feet under dark because that was draining. I hope there a few humorous moments or light characters in it as well?

If you like intelligent and witty writing, with a raft of great characters, then you really can't go wrong with TWW.

50 is a bargain.

The first time I watched the show was on DVD - the wife was out so I thought I'd check out the first episode. Ended up watching five, and then when I told the OH about it we ended up watching the same five all over again when she got home. It really is that good.

I have had the entire series on DVD (boxset) for a few years now, and still have not watched it.

I have read from around the net that once you start, it sort of takes over your life until you have watched them all - so I need to have a lot of spare time before starting I think.

Yes, it has a lot of comedy that's similar in feel to Ally McBeal though without so much absurdity

Not sure of the distinction you're making as I didn't watch 6ft under but West Wing does carry serious and sometimes dark storylines. They tend to be intrinsic to the story arcs so posting links would be a bit spoilerish but this one's quite stand alone

Oh, and thanks by the way. I'd forgotten how long it was since I've watched this through so shall be starting again (probably my fifth viewing)

It's not that bad, but you probably won't want to waste any time watching any other TV when you still have West Wing in the bank, and it is rare that you'll only watch one episode at a time

A friend was waxing lyrical about it and when I saw it on Amazon for 28* a few years ago I bought the complete box set.

*It was on Amazon Marketplace listed as damaged. The only thing wrong with it was the lid of the box containing all the seasons had a small tear in one of the corners. Taped up and okay again!

It is a fantastic show and one of my favourites ever. You will not regret buying it if you're into that kind of heavy dialogue, witty, political drama.

It is absolutely worth the 50 or so from Amazon. It is funny, dramatic and heart-warming and it is very difficult watching 'ordinary' TV progs after WW. For that reason we ration ourselves and never watch more than 3 on the trot because it completely takes us over. The boxed set is beautifully presented and has extras, although we wont watch them until we have completed the series. Then we will start again from the beginning!

So close to buying it but still not sure, I'm scared what if I don't like it?

When I meant dark don't mean by story lines per se but the characters themselves. i dont mean dark in the vein of homeland (another one of my favs) but six feet under, where there were rarely any happy or light moments, everything was gloomy and depressing and problematic with serious psych problems involving everyone.

It's very well written with brillient characters who grow and develope. Great story arch over 7 series with each episode having it's own story as well.

It does not get bogged down and anything too political is explained it a non condescending way and it's very funny when it needs to be and very emotional when required.

I would put the ending of series 2 as about the best single episode of a TV series I have ever seen.

Luckily with The West Wing the opening episode gets the series off to a flyer, so if you like that then it's a safe assumption that you'll like the rest.

As such, why don't you just get a hold of the first episode, watch it, and then go from there. iTunes has the first episode for 1.89.

Try before you buy......

Nothing like that. They're all very positive, happy and clever and most of the time the stories are very light

Its not a series (particularly season 1) that you can just have on in the background. The dialogue and plot move at a very fast pace to start with, so you need to pay attention.

But your efforts will be rewarded

WW is hands down the most outstanding TV series ever made.

That's really all you need to know.

The show is very much as described by other posters. It really is excellent.

Re the actual DVDs, be aware that seasons 1 and 2 are in 4:3. Worse than that though, season 3 is in non-anamorphic widescreen, so doesn't resize to fit the screen. It looks absolutely horrible. You can use your TV's settings to zoom the picture, but then you're losing quality. There's no good way to watch season 3.

I can only echo what other posters have said. This is pretty much my #1 TV show ever, especially the first few seasons. (it's way better than Homeland, and I think that show is amazing as well). It's genuinely great casting, great writing, great comedy and great drama all in one package. Despite a couple of attempts there really isn't a British drama like it.

It's not especially dark, there are grim and powerfully dramatic moments, but in general the show is amazingly upbeat and manages to make arguments about the most boring political talking points both moving and entertaining.

On the bright side, when the series eventually hits BD, those issues are fixed. They're already fixed in the HD versions available on demand in the States. When I heard that the first two seasons were now 16:9 I thought they'd have cropped them, but the following screens show that not to be the case.

Pilot in HD

Pilot in SD

Season 3 is fine now as well.

We used to cringe while going through the first three seasons on any rewatch. Not now.

Good to know. With the DVDs, the picture quality is markedly better from S4 onwards. I hope they'll release the series on BD at some point, though I'm not convinced it'll happen.

It is, imho anyway, the finest scripted drama show there's been so yes, very much worth it.

That is very true, you can't "just watch an episode of TWW" you end up watching half a dozen (or more!)
