Depends what you use the iPad for but I would recommend the apple office products, I would also recommend an app called "filebrowser" which allows you to copy files from pc shared folders or nas drives without the need for iTunes. Then find one of the video players that would suit you.

What type of apps?

On my iPad (what type and size doesn't really matter much) I used the free TV catchup apps like 4OD and iPlayer, Sky Go, and I play some free games like Sims Freeplay, Astraware Crosswords.

I find the Kayak app really useful when I'm searching for flights too.

I also like the Kindle app when I don't have my Kindle with me, because I can pick up my book where I left off thanks to Whispersync.

Depends on your interests. IMDb is great for movie lovers. Tunein Radio doesn't sound exciting, but I find it fascinating, instant access to thousand of stations around the world. BBC iPlayer..of course. Netflix..but some people have had problems with a recent update.
That's one thing I've found, an app can start-off great, but later updates often ruin it. Why I don't know, if something is working fine, leave it alone.
