Yes, I know that the pearl series has been discontinued (just going to get it from Amazon or something like that), but these are the following reasons why I'm interested:

First of all I currently own a budget Samsung Android phone (Galaxy Europa), I've had it for 2-3 years now, it's finally coming to the end of its life & I've got to say the past year with this phone has left me with a certain disdain for touchscreen phones, as my phone became agonisingly slow & unresponsive (yes, I know that higher end touchscreen phones will have a much higher performance speed to them, but I just can't shake that feeling), This has made me want to go back to the classic candybar phone.

Secondly the main reasons that I want the 9105 is because it's just slightly over 100, it has the classic alphanumeric keypad (really don't like the qwerty keypad that the BB is famed for), the nice compact size & most of all the smartphone capabilities for example wifi, apps etc... (don't know if there is any other phone like this).

Finally the last reason as to why I'm considering the 9105, is because I am very much a proud owner of the PlayBook & I'd somewhat like to utilise the full capabilities of the Playbook with Bridge.

Now what I want to know is what kind of applications can I expect from this device, (applications isn't necessarily a must, but certainly a plus point) & what do you think of my reasons as to why I want to purchase this device.

No idea with regards to apps I'm afraid. As you say, there will no doubt be some available, but it'll be a small amount compared to other phones/operating systems.

With regards it being compatible with your Playbook, I'd check that's the case - I think I'm right in saying that the Pearl released with OS5, and can be upgraded as far as OS6. Will your Playbook not be on a more recent version that that?

With regards your last question, what do I think of your reasons for getting the phone - well, they're a bit skewed if I'm being honest. You say on the one hand that you appreciate that high end touchscreen phones will offer better speeds and responsiveness etc, then you dismiss this this perfectly legitimate argument and decide to go with "a feeling" instead. Doesn't make an iota of sense to me.

I once had an LG Viewty. Apart from the camera, which was very decent, it's by far the worst phone I've ever used. The touchscreen especially had me tearing my hair out most days. Had I let the experience of that piece of sh, sorry, kit, cloud my judgement on subsequent phones, I'd be missing out on some fantastic devices now.

I can't help you find the Blackberry I'm afraid, but have you had a go with a modern Android phone? I have to say, I concur with R Molehusban - don't base the experience of that old handset with what you'll get with a ~100 Android handset - better, bigger screen and better performance. You don't have to go top of the range to get a handset that will make the Europa look pitiful!

...Or wait 'til the budget iPhone is announced in a few months?

Plus you'll need to subscribe to a Blackberry data plan to have anything more than a basic handset and the web - no apps, email, BBM etc.

Just a thought!

My Mum had this phone and the only reason I'm telling you to avoid it like the plague is because she went to charge it and the port pushed right back in... knackered the phone (was out of warranty and she went for a cheapo touch screen phone.)
