Poor Jason Derulo. He’s a great dancer, good enough singer for the current era of Pop music and he has a marketable look yet he’s always one step behind the competition.
For example, the singer released his new song, “The Other Side”, and it places him on the tail end of a dying trend.

As Chris Brown, Usher and several other acts gradually move away from generic Pop radio fodder, Derulo charges head first into the EDM movement with “The Other Side”.
The song is features cliche production fit for an episode of Jersey Shore, which was cancelled by MTV since 2012. However, that’s not the end of Derulo’s problems.

Instead of taking a hint from his peers who now place more emphasis on actual singing, Derulo relies on auto-tune to give his voice that overused robotic tone.
Perhaps if he was less focused on convincing the world that he and Jordin Sparks are really in love, he would have heard the news that auto-tune is dead. Just ask Ke$ha

The worrying thing is radio continue to play this Generic recycled EDM Garbage. Even his LAUGH in the song is auto-tuned

The following things annoy me throughout the song:

1) The instrumental seems to rip off Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream'.

2) "sparks fly like the fourth of July" seems to rip-off 'Firework'. (and I know she hasn't copyrighted the "4th July" part but since the instrumental rips off KP, I couldn't help but think it).

His voice is very auto-tuned, but to be honest...he has a very pitchy tone anyway if you listen to his life performances.
I thought he was alright to begin with, but then again most people liked Whatcha Say because of that Imogen Heap sample...

I agree, but everything is autotuned in this song.
His laugh is so badly auto-tuned, it begins to sound like lil wayne.

I'm not so bothered about the autotune. You can have good songs that use autotune, and even if this song had no autotune it would still be awful.

It's just so generic. Seriously, why is he doing this? It'll just flop like that atrocious song he did last year called Breathing. Capital FM played it endlessly for months, but it just could never get in the top 10. The biggest male artists right now are Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Drake, Macklemore. Why? Because they're not doing generic songs like this!

My favourite song of his is Ridin' Solo (which also has a lot of autotune, but it's actually catchy, and doesn't use a 4-4 dance beat!).

But this is as generic as it can be.

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream instrumental and "Fireworks 4th of July" lyrics.

Radio needs to put a stop to playing generic edm junk. If they do not, I can see an endless stream of artists releasing the same kind of music over and over again.....

Radio need to put their foot down

I cannot hack Jason Derulo & his horrendously autotuned crap.

Hopefully he will disappear off the scene soon

Agreed just because a song has auto tune doesn't mean it's bad. This song just has nothing special and I can't see it grabbing people's a attention as its too generic. However I disagree with Drake, his latest song Started From The Bottom is just as generic as this.

On the positive side for Derulo at least it's better than his contemporary Jay Sean latest flop song and it could eat some airplay here like DWGH.

Over reaction much??

I dont think you can tell that much about someones personality based on whether they like autotune or not!

Some people just like singers to be able to sing!!

I agree it already sounds out of date and the dance craze only came in a few years back!

I don't know what else I was expecting anyway, he was always a bit crap.

Don't think it's gonna flop. It's the most added song on US radio this week.

Started From the Bottom isn't generic in my opinion. It's minimal and has lots of different things going on at the same time. Lots of different rhythms and melodys. Jason's song is just a 4/4 dance beat (a kick drum going 1...2...3...4...) and a melody. I've been hearing these songs on the radio ever since I was a little kid. I remember even 10 years ago thinking to myself that certain EDM songs were generic.

I hardly ever hear generic hip hop songs in general. Whilst with dance music it's very easy to be generic, but with other genres like rock, even though a lot of those songs sound similar to each other, they're not generic, since they have loads going on at the same time, unique sounds and instruments, etc. Whilst with the dance songs on the radio, they all seem to just use the exact same synths. They never try putting in weird sounds into their songs or trying anything creative.

I'm just glad we've got Macklemore and Justin Timberlake showing them all how its done this year!

Anyway I'm really loving this song and it is by far the best thing he has put his name to.

Yes, sure it's dance-pop and contains autotune which therefore allows it to fit in with the music from 2009-2012 but that's really not a good enough reason to hate it. I'd have far less respect for JD if he just copied the likes of his "peers" such as Chris Brown and Usher and moved away from a sound he actually began his career with. Actually, he's arguably more authentic than the aforementioned two. Usher and Chris Brown, who were both renowned for their R&B sound, shifted genres to fit with the times and, now that the music scene has shifted again, so have they. They are the ones I have little respect for musically. Jason DeRulo, whilst never having that great material (bar TOS and RS), has always stuck to two sounds throughout his career (R&B mid-tempos and dance-pop uptempos). He's not really that driven by the current music scene - well at least not as much as many other artists.

Anyway, 'The Other Side' is amazing. Great lyrics for a change, really good vocal despite the electronics and definitely a worthy #1.

i actually find this quite catchy and better than Don't Wanna Go Home...

isnt that his thing though, samling songs because he's done it quite a lot, and it must work for him because its been playlisted on Radio 1 and has done well in Australia. I think its his best song since In My Head/Breathing

Yeah, he samples a lot. Out of his singles, the ones that use samples I think are Whatcha Say, Ridin' Solo, The Sky's the Limit, Don't Wanna Go Home and Fight For You.
