After some further updating of teasers elsewhere apparently 'holding Clara’s hand provides the way out of this mess' so it seems like I wasn't actually that far off in the first place!
As long as the episode is okay I can normally forgive the endings. I mean The Doctor's Wife didn't exactly have the greatest of endings.

the fact they might be a bit less keen on the episode than the others doesn't seem especially odd to me, but retrospectively it's unfortunate it's the one quoted in the OP when it's the atypical review in the bunch. C'est la vie though.....
