I took my dog out today and the amount of poop that was around was horrible. It was the same spot that we often walk, but today it seemed so bad. It takes seconds to clean up, so why don't some dog owners do it? Even as a dog owner, I hate it when I see dog poop on the path - I also hate it when none dog owners assume that all dog owners are the same in that they'll just leave their dog's mess behind!

My dog also has the habit of rolling in anything smelly - there is nothing I hate more than having to bath my Lab after an early morning walk - a 7am bath is not that great when the office beckons at 8.30am !!

I have recently been onto my local council about the amount of people not picking it up, disgusting and so easy to remedy. They said they are more worried about people bagging it and leaving it than just leaving it but both should be stopped IMO.

Laziness. The one that gets me is the bags of poo. They bother to pick it up then stash the bag in random places, a tee, a fence, a bush. Odd.

It makes me really mad! When we went out recently, an old lady was walking her dog, the dog walked way behind her and defecated in the grass - she watched him, didn't even bat an eyelid at what he did and just carried on walking. I challenged her and she called me everything under sun.

Infuriating isn't it?!!

Round here half the people let their dogs off lead all the time and 'walk' them whilst glued to their phones. They have no idea if or where they mess and don't seem to care.
One idiot allows his JRT to go on the grass outside my flat, so everyone thinks it's my dog and I have to clear up after someone else's mutt.

It's so easy and people can't complain about lack of bins any more, *grumble*

I will admit to reporting someone for letting their two dogs foul and not clear up. I only wish I could have been a fly on her front door when they knocked.

Sick and tired of seeing it happen. I noticed how she waits for cars to pass and then she walks on. Two v big dogs so plenty of poop 7 days a week.

Anyway I was not out for trouble, just if I had confronted her it would have been abuse so why give myself the grief. Let the council poop man deal with it. Hope it's made her realise it's not on and she now cleans up after the dogs like everyone else does.

And yes the poop bags thrown in hedges or just dropped on the pavement are as bad as not picking up.

Why do people bag it and then leave it? You've already done the nastiest bit but leaving the bag renders the whole excercise pointless

There are 2 areas on my usual walk, across fields and the canal towpath, that are absolutely full of dog poo.
Even if the owners just used a stick to push it to the side of the path that would be an improvement. I'm sick of having to dodge the stuff.

The reason people dump the bags is, I think, because there are no bins in the vicinity and they can't handle the smell of poo. I got my local councillor on the case regarding the lack of bins (i.e. zero) on a lovely green area near me and two shiny new ones were soon installed. There are still offenders, but the situation has improved.

I do try to walk my dog responsibly - and always amazed at how much waste he manages to produce just a few moments after going in my own garden! I always pick up after him and there are two council bins on our regular walk. Unfortunately - they are always full and stinking. So end up putting the plastic bag into the boot and putting into my own bin.

I think that many dog owners do try to be responsible - but it is also up to their local council to monitor and empty bins.

If you live somewhere where people are leaving the bags why not lobby your local council to install a bin?

If enough people ring to ask for a poop bag bin then the council are normally very good. I have helped to get at least 4 bins at different walks. Just a matter of a phone call.

They don't bother using the bins in my town. We have quite a few and yet the pavements and beauty spots are littered.

this. plus much of my aera is beaches, and the tide comes right up, so the bins are at the entrances to the beach, people stash them in the cliffs instead

I think we are making excuses for people now, where I walk they have loads of bins and they are emptied daily. No excuses at all, some people even leave it right next to the bin !

I wish I knew the answer to the original question, although I HAVE been guilty of it when I found myself with a pooping dog and no bag (I really thought I had some when I left the house.) I used to give my sister some stick over this, she used to bend down and PRETEND to pick it up in case someone was watching. If you go to that much trouble, surely you may as pick it up while you're down there?

This makes me so mad. Our local field resembled a dog toilet over the Winter months. I asked the Council to put some posters up in the hope that it may do some good. However, I find the worst offenders are those with the biggest dogs. Two American Bull Mastiffs walk on the field, neither owner picks up and they leave piles of poop the size of elephant dung. It's a sports field, used by the local schools and footballs clubs. Can't imagine what it must be like doing a sliding tackle and ending up amongst a pile of poop. So gross, but what can be done about it? Local authorities have cut back and cannot afford dog wardens to patrol everywhere, even the local parks are shedding ground staff, so I am expecting the situation to get worse over the Summer.

This subject gets right on my t*ts.

I have two dogs, and in every coat and bag that I own I have poo bags. My life is one big poo bag. I always pick up after my dogs (and my husband does too).

But the amount of people that don't is astounding. I live next to a football field. Everyone walks their dogs over there but I am amazed by the amount of dog sh*t lying around. The path to the field runs next to my house, and there is even mounds of poo down the path. I pick it up so noone thinks its my dogs, but I hate picking up other dogs mess.

If it were up to me I would put up CCTV and name and shame people.

^This

There are several large fields next to where i live, along with a long track where lots of people walk their dogs. There is about one bin over the whole area. Luckily for me i only live around the corner so i just put the waste in my own bin if i have to but i don't know why there are so few bins when the council are clearly aware that lots of people walk their dogs.

Although these areas are mostly clean of dog mess, i often notice much more on the street pavements! Absolutely disgusting, especially when it is smeared all over the path off people walking in it and you have to walk onto the main road to avoid it.

Your second paragraph made me smile, even my dressing gown pocket is full of poo bags, for when I take them out side for their wee first thing, not often they surprise me but I take my bags just in case.
