I've managed to get myself a 12 month licence for Hotspot Shield.

So using simple and straightforward layman words and language can anyone explain the benefits for me of using this from a security point of view?

Although my router is wireless I used a cabled connection to it for my computer however I use wifi for my iphone and I have Hotspot shield on that too.

VPN will help you unblock some geo-blocked content on the internet. Hotspot Shield unlocks U.S websites, whilst Expat Shield does the same for the UK content.

From the security point of view, it's important to say that you are never 100 % hidden or anonymous online. While VPN offers better anonymity on the Internet, it's always possible to trace someones real location even through the VPN. Some websites, particularly online forums are blocking the use of VPN, so people who use them are prompted to disable them when accessing such websites.

VPN offers certain level of anonymity online and enables users to unlock geo-blocked content on the Internet, but it doesn't provide full anonymity and protection.

I have found this better than Expat Shield
Far easier to set up & more reliable
It allows us to watch UK TV for free here on Rhodes
