Whatsapp usually requires a phone number to activate it.

Apparently you can hack it to work, but as with anything like this, you do so at your own risk.

whatsapp is a phone only app, it requires a phone number to operate.

As your on o2, you can download an App called TU Go on adroid that enables you to make calls and send txts on another device from your number. I have it for my Ipad which is handy if i dont have my phone with me for whatever reason

not tried it, but it looks like its pretty straightforward to run on a tablet.....

though to get the APK you'll want a reputable site or (preferably) a friend's Android phone to extract it yourself for sideloading.
