X Factor rules - are there any?

I don't watch any of these 'reality' shows and am, consequently, ignorant as to whether they are any prerequisites for contestants appearing on them, in this case the X Factor.
When JLS was runner up to Alexander Burke, in 2008, the band was not an amateur outfit, as it was already signed to a production company. I thought the show was like BGT, for non pro performers, but obviously not.
It has been blatantly evident since the show began, that a successful career is not dependant upon winning the show.
So what exactly is the point of the X Factor?

Probably that the producers make their own rules as they go along.
