Gender bias
Whilst Lord Sugar hasn't had great longevity from many of his 'Apprentices', I wonder whether we're going to see this season reveal a gender bias based on previous results...
All three of the women he has hired thus far have exited his business - and from the looks of it, none of them made it a full year in regular unbroken employment with him. What does this say about Sugar's recruitment process when it comes to females? What does it say about the females themselves in terms of medium-long term commitment? And do we think now that Sugar is biased towards the chaps, given that his main successes from the show, whilst limited, have all been men? "Law of averages" would suggest that a female should be lined up to win this year. Will it happen though? |

I have considered this... he hasn't been very lucky with his female winners, has he? Although I think that with Michelle and Stella, their gender was irrelevant to the outcome, and that could have happened with a male winner as well. The only time when taking on a woman was a problem was with Yasmina, as she got pregnant twice and had family commitments.
On the other hand, two out of the three winners of Young Apprentice have been girls, and as far as I know Zara and Ashleigh are both doing quite well for themselves - although only time will tell, as I don't think either of them are actually using Lord Sugar's fund yet. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the future holds for them before we say whether or not they have been successful winners. I don't think he's necessarily biased against female winners - Susan came quite close to winning Series 7, and even though she didn't win, they are working together now. I think there is a good chance that a woman may win Series 9. |

I don't think that it is about a bias against females.
Michelle didn't seem to want the job and led him down the garden path a bit. I don't think Stella fully understood what the role was going to entail and Yasmina got pregnant through a co-worker. In spite of the fact that she didn't work there for long, she was very complimentary towards him. I just think its down to luck. |

The male winners stay but were closer fits for projects that seemed to have more substance. Tim needs and gets management experience, but eventually moves on. Simon fits his job, and is young and inexperienced enough, and has the background to match it. By series 4, the job has declined to a level that someone like Lee can do it. By series 5 and 6, he's firing the most capable, experienced females, often for no good reasons , and employing people with much less expertise who want to make an entry into business, and Stella because she's the only competent one left - even though he's seemingly still got nothing better to offer the winner to do . His continuing problem is that he does seem to attract more female high flyers to the show than males, and often doesn't know what to do with them. Thats worsened since he's come up with the new prize - as its the males (Tom and Ricky) who walked in with the ready to go design, and the ready to be developed safe existing business -both on the required, limited, scale in safe fields he felt happy with. Meanwhile, the best female's had no projects at all, or projects for things he wasn't interested in, or better ideas which needed a lot more facts to decide on. |
