I mentioned this on TiBB. I think they have already selected the housemates, but they just haven't told them yet, to avoid HM spoilers leaking and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure Annette Edwards (aged 61, oldest Page 3 model) is one of the chosen housemates, considering she was scouted by researchers for the show and all of the talk about older HM's being brought up recently (and in the article).
Figures that when they picked an older HM she'd still be a glamour model.

I just mean they were not very good HMs, in one way or another. I don't think there's any overarching property they all have in common, apart from being poor HMs.

For example you cite walking as a reason to call Lesley Brain "poor", so do you also think Shabby (BB11) was "poor"?
Sure, when I'm not going by whether I personally liked then as HMs or not; and I think there'd be widespread agreement that BB shouldn't pick HMs who walk.

However, I wasn't listing sufficient conditions for a HM to be poor -- I'm not, for example, saying that all walkers will necessarily be poor HMs -- just giving a brief indication of one of the main points against each of the over 40s as HMs.

I actually don't think there are that many ways to vary the HMs, so age mix is certainly a good way imo. But I agree they don't seem to have had much success in finding the right older HMs (or mix) yet and I certainly would like BB to stop feeling like a club 18-30 experience. But given C5 were so focused on that 16-34 demographic, I doubt you have much to worry about despite the Sun claims!
I don't see how there can be a shortage of ways to vary HMs, though it might be hard to give them all convenient labels such as "age". Certainly when I watch BB I don't think they have pretty much every possible sort of person in there, except for older ones.

However, BB has the problem that HMs have to be able to take several months away from their normal life. It's not surprising that so many of them are students (who have the summer off) or models / actors / etc (who don't have regular work) or young (and so don't have work or family commitments they can't take that much time away from). There's also a psychological factor. Lots of people would not want to be in BB. So it's not surprising that they get 'wannabes': people who'd like the attention and fame that comes from being on tv, and people who'll act up for the cameras. What's at least more surprising is when BB finds people who aren't in any of those categories yet still stay the course and aren't dismissed as dull just because they aren't flamboyant or "drama"-making.

I'm amused at the rumour that one of the older HMs will be "Annette Edwards (aged 61, oldest Page 3 model)".

I don't understand what they mean by wannabes though. Everyone tries to get a break. I think the problem some people have with recent housemates is the way they go about trying to get famous or money etc. Not so much that they want it.

Mario for me was one of the greatest ever housemates. You have to give people a chance. You can't just block out anyone who is in their 40s.

What sort of ways they go about trying do you have in mind?

It's certainly seemed to me that plenty of people had a problem with lots of HMs being wannabes (looking for fame, media work, etc) rather than ordinary people.

I think that Mario, directly or indirectly, did a lot of damage to bb9. What was good about him? I think it would have been a better series if he'd never been in it.

Anyway, if it's ok for people to say they want older HMs, surely it's equally ok for people to say they don't.

I think that being over 40 is one of the best indicators that a HM will be a poor one, and unless BB is going to pick HMs at random, they have to go by something. I think they're more likely to get a good set of HMs if they stick to 20-40.

I,d like to see some older housemates, it,ll give it some variety instead of all youngsters
Why that particular way of getting variety, though?

When they talk about magazine deals when they leave the house while on the show. Just the openness I suppose about looking for it. Instead of just letting it happen naturally.

About Mario, I thought he was fantastic for the sheer fact on how serious he took himself, the one liners, absolute classic. We probably won't agree but I thought the series got a bit worse when he left, after having rewatched that series on youtube.

I can understand what you mean by some of the older housemates in the past but I don't think we can completely rule out anyone over 40 to be honest Veri. You just never know what sort of housemate will come along.

I mean, Paula Hamilton, although was in CBB, if she was in normal BB, I think she would have been brilliant.

Isn't there a bit of a disconnect between Channel 5's professed desire to move Big Brother away from "a bunch of fame-hungry youngsters who want to show off" and givng BOTS to a "fame-hungry young show-off"?

I suspect what this means is that they've just cast the usual bunch of fame hungry young wannabes but added a 'Carole Vincent' type for balance

So is this what they call going more upmarket?

Emma Willis to Ryan Clark is definitely more down.
Come on now, it's BOTS

Willis to Clark is just changing the brand of polish used on the turd

I thought the series got better once he left, but only because Lisa turned into an absolute crackpot with her tales of outerbody experiences and the little green man that visited her.

Older housemates can be good value, I remember the old lady a few years back who was crying under her duvet and she told someone she was just sniffing her mattress . The girl she told didn't know where to look or what to say.

Yes, Lisa was more interesting after Mario left, and not only because of things like that. She started to become more popular too.

That was Lesley in bb8. But she walked out on day 11. She didn't even last two weeks in a 13 week series. She seemed to have a lot of promise, but I find it hard to see her as good value overall because of a few things like that.

Perhaps Lisa came out of her shell more but I preferred Marios character over her personally.

Hmm. It's seemed to me that a lot of the objections to 'wannabes' have been because of they way they look, that they already have agents, that they're aiming for media work and see BB as a way to get there, and so on, rather than because they talk about deals. When they talk about it, it's like an extra annoyance.

And there's a kind of honorary exception to the wannabes who happen to be popular: it doesn't seem to get people thinking that wannabes aren't necessarily bad as a type. (The idea that wannabes and bad HMs were the same people was so strong at one point that it was even claimed Carole from bb8 was a wannabe.)

About Mario, I thought he was fantastic for the sheer fact on how serious he took himself, the one liners, absolute classic. We probably won't agree but I thought the series got a bit worse when he left, after having rewatched that series on youtube.
A curious thing is that it could be true that the series got worse when he left and that it would have been better if he'd never been in it at all.

I think a lot might have gone differently if Mario hadn't been there. Steph probably wouldn't have been evicted in week 1; the house might well not have divided in the same way; and so on. And where did Lisa get the idea that Rachel had been coming on to Mario? (Was it something Mario said?)

I can understand what you mean by some of the older housemates in the past but I don't think we can completely rule out anyone over 40 to be honest Veri. You just never know what sort of housemate will come along.

It's more that I disagree with the idea that there should be more older HMs than that I want to rule them out completely; but I think their track record is so poor that "no HMs over 40" would probably produce better results than "more HMs over 40".

And Paula didn't last. She was first out, and I think she could well have been quickly evicted, or else walked, in an ordinary BB too. (It's too bad vote-to-save didn't do its thing then and save Paula rather than Frankie. Did Frankie do anything of interest the entire series?)

That's not a denial at all, he's basically saying nothing has been made public "yet" - "yet" implies it is true.

It's ambiguous, and perhaps deliberately so. On one reading, it's true but hasn't been confirmed; on the other, it's just rumours and he's reminding people that he hasn't confirmed anything so far, despite all the stories.

I personally think that it was something to do that initially, Rachel spent a fair bit of time with Mario and Lisa, but only because she thought of them as the mum and dad of the house and looked up to them.

BBs 3 and 5 were no more social experiments than the BBs that came after.
Definitely not, but a lot of the tasks had some psychological grounding, even if they were silly - BB5 is possibly stretching it in terms of that, but even the very design of that series had a psychological basis in terms of the cramped environment and inverted walls. There was a lot more "to" the show in that period than there is now, which is far more vapid, and of course BB5 was kind of the instigator of the shows current status.

even thought The Sun was right about Emma
im treating most of this story with caution

I'll wait and give him a chance, he may surprise.

And if he's crap, at least he's not ruining the main show like Dowling was
