When I say "stick" I mean all the remarks about "gurning" and similar, not just preferring other actors in the role.

Well, there will always be a group of people that will think about someone like that, nobody and noone's acting style can be universally loved by everyone. And even David Tennant is no exception to this. It's the same way as with some people complaining that Matt Smith's acting is wooden etc., which tbh always puzzles me because I can understand people disliking his acting, but I personally don't see anything wooden in his performance.

The reason why David Tennant is so good is because he is extremely versatile. He can play any role, do any accent, comedy, serious drama, rom-coms, sci-fi, Shakespeare, children's TV, good guys, villains, absolutely anything really, and always make it seem convincing. He has to be the one of the least type cast actors ever.

Fright Night was great, and showed that he can do mad over the top roles just as much as the more serious subtle ones.

I have never seen him put in a poor performance in anything, even if the script itself wasn't up to much.

Obviously, because he is very good looking he does attract some fans who like him for that reason alone, and I think that's why he gets such harsh criticism from some people on these forums.

Well, I know that now, don't I . . .

Perhaps because DT is in Nativity 2, but not Nativity?

What about Bright Young Things? That was a top quality film that he was in, although not in a lead role, I know.

I don't find him good looking - but I've been won over by his acting and his personality.

It has been repeated since it's first showing - about 2007, probably. After David became The Doctor, anyway - he's why I watched it. Excellent, as you say. And he was quite young in it - early 20s.

I didn't know he was in that, thanks - I'll look out for it.

It was just before David Tennant started to become well known. He plays Ginger, a very wealthy man and old friend of Nina's.

The whole film is utterly brilliant, not just DT and is one of my all time favourite films. (And most of my favourites are sci-fi/fantasy/animation, so this is unusual for me.)

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched Bright Young Things now. Everything is good about it: the cast, the acting, the way it looks, the music, and of course Stephen Fry wrote the script and directed it.

I'm always raving about this film to people, but half the time they don't seem to know what film I'm talking about. I suppose it's not that famous unfortunately.

I was aware of it, it's just never been on my list of films to see. Now i know DT's in it, it will get put on said list.

I should probably say that he doesn't have a lot of screen time, but he does have some important scenes, because his character is fundamental to the plot and the lives of two of the main characters.

I've just remembered that he was also in Glorious 39, which I suppose would be counted as a decent film, because it's Stephen Poliakoff, but I had to stop watching this half way through, because it's so upsetting and harrowing. I did manage to see DT's scenes though, because they are all in the early part.

Yes I've seen Glorious 39. It is upsetting. Chilling because of the apparent niceness of the characters who are so evil. Tennant was one of the good guys.

I found it upsetting, because of the way the animals are treated.

If you ever want to see something obscure with Tennant in I recommend searching for the spoof documentary series "people like us", one episode starred Tennant as the subject of the investigative journalist's camera as an out of work actor.

It ends on a meloncholic note as Roy (the journalist) gets quite attached to Tennant's character and feels sorry for him.
David assures him he'll be alright in the end.
Of course he bloody would, he'll be the Doctor

On the subject of bad acting tho, in last weeks ep of Who I fond Matt to be particularly phoning it in, which is weird because normally I find him very good, if not quite on Tennant's level.
The whole "Clara, I'm not holding your hand" thing was particularly bad and the rest of the episode he seemed content to pull his Monkey face as if that was enough.

A rare miss from him.
The only really bad thing he does on a regular basis is flaps his arms around a lot, it's really getting annoying now.
