Doctor Who is now only 45 minutes long an episodes when it used to be an hour. I prefer the older format. It gives more depth to the show and allows for fuller development and is the traditional length for most dramas.

I think they shortened it to accommodate BBC America audience because they require 15 minutes of adverts in the hour. But this is OUR show. Why should we have to change for them. If they want it, they should adapt to us.

It isnt fair and its dumbing down the show.Ive found all the episodes so far dont really develop narrative and seem cut off short...and now i realise why...because the show has got shorter.

ISherlock is an hour and a half. I hope they dont shave that down as well to accommodate adverts in America.

They should always put the original audience first, not commercial interests in America.Im not going to watch this watered down version.

What do others think?

When was each episode an hour long?

The earlier ones were nominally 50 minutes IIRC, so they are a bit shorter now, but not hugely so.

I don't know what "others" think, but I think I'm fed up with these nonsensical threads whinging about non-existent situations.

Sorry, but you did ask my opinion. That's it.

I do agree that they should be longer. Make whoever wants to put ads in show it for an hour and 30 minutes or something. There must be 30 mins of something else they can fill the rest of the half hour with. That's if they are determined to have on the hour slots.

So in absence of anything new to use to bash the program people are now making things up are they? This is getting ridiculous.

But careful everyone. Even though the OP has posted total misinformation it is their OPINION and as such should not be challenged lest you get accused of a vicious personal attack.

It could easily be solved with more two-parters. That's what the show really lacks that the classic era had in bucket-loads: genuine cliffhangers for you to come back next week

What do you mean by earlier ones? From what I remember and from information from various online sources a majority of NuWho episodes were 45 minutes long with some exceptions such as for example The Eleventh Hour. That's not counting the Christmas and other specials.

I don't know why people even post in these threads. (I know...I'm doing it!!)

David Tennant episodes were an hour.
I just watched a couple.
It does affect how a drama develops.

I know. But actually why shouldn't we? At least have our say and then move on. But if too many threads like this ruin the forum its our responsibility as fans to improve it? Maybe??? I dunno.

Anyway. Rose- running time. 45 minutes. I could go on.

According to Wikipedia the only non-special episodes that have been longer than 45 minutes are:

Last of the Time Lords (52 min)
Partners in Crime (50 min)
The Fires of Pompeii (50 min)
Turn Left (50 min)
Journey's End (65 min)
The Eleventh Hour (65 min)
The Vampires of Venice (50 min)
The Pandorica Opens (50 min)
The Big Bang (55 min)
A Good Man Goes to War (50 min)
Let's Kill Hitler (50 min)
The God Complex (50 min)
Asylum of the Daleks (50 min)

So the Matt Smith episodes average longer than the Tennant ones, apart from specials.

No they weren't. The specials were an hour long. The majority were 45 minutes or thereabouts so your original post is wrong. Can you correct it please?

yes, two parters is a way round it. maybe they will do more of those.

Just quickly checked Wikipedia and every episode of Series 1 and 2* is listed as 45 mins apart from Doomsday which is given as 48 mins.

*Excluding The Christmas Invasion.

I like Mat smith actually, but I dont like this season much and Im trying to understand why, and I think one of the reasons is the narrative doesnt seem to go anywhere which led me to think about epsiode length.....that's all.

That's nice and all, but I believe that before posting a thread such as this you should verify whether what you're posting is actually a fact or whether it's just your feeling. Posting threads with incorrect information such as this makes you look like a troll.

To be pedantic, the TV slot time is now 45 minutes including intro etc so that cuts time down, where as previous slot time was given as one hour including intro etc.
I do think they have shaved time off them and that it matters.

One of the main reasons they are 45 minutes is so that when sold abroad they'll fill an hour slot including ad breaks..which is fair enough really
Most u.s. shows run for the same length of time as a doctor who episode
And their fans don't moan
As someone else said...a nonsensical thread

As far as I can recall NuWho has always been 45 minutes long, including intro, credits etc except for the specials. There are no two parters this series so perhaps that is what you're missing?

Goldyfish, thats exactly the point im making only i dont think it is fair.
DiscoP, that could be what Im missing...a chance to develop something over a longer period...like they do with Sherlock.

Two parters and specials aside... the timeslot is the same as it has been since the show returned. So if you liked it with Eccleston and Tennant, there's no difference to now.
