Why doesnt the BBC offer cash for missing episodes?

You always hear in the news how people supposedly have a missing episode but if the BBC really wanted to get them if they offered cash and a tiny percentage of DVD sales people would be more inclined to come forward.

Sure its the property of BBC in the first place but they need to try new things to entice people who wont just hand out the episode they own.

They won't even finance 13 episodes of Doctor Who a year, so they're hardly likely to pay for old episodes.

Any old episodes belong to the BBC. If someone had nicked your car, would you pay the person who had it to return it??

The BBC has said time and again that they won't ask any questions as to how any old episodes have ended with someone other than the BBC, but there's no reason why they should pay to have their own property returned.

Sadly that is not true.

Do they? Why is this so obvious?

It is very nice to hope that some of the missing episodes might one day resurface, but to blindly assume that some mysterious people 'obviously have then' is to live in dream land. Can't you accept that at least most of these episodes are, sadly, likely lost forever?

Unless you have proof to the contrary? If so, let's hear it please!
