Chicken wings, the new hen's teeth?
Erlang

We buy 5 or 6 boxes of chicken wings from Tesco's most weeks, but for the last fortnight they have acquired a rarity equal to said chickens teeth, shopping around has proved a bit fruitless, is there some fad CW diet we haven't heard of or are chickens now some genetic wingless monster.

Anyone else notice the scarcity?

Not sure what you mean by 'boxes'. Do you mean ready-meal type stuff, like spicy wings or southern fried? I get chicken wings from the butcher for making stock and they're always in plentiful supply. If you've got a good local butcher, try them.

Never had any problems sourcing raw chicken wings from Sainsbury's, Morrisons or Asda for my dog.
Butcher's can order them in also.

I was in ASDA yesterday and was browsing the chicken as I was thinking of doing SFC and saw that they had boxes of chicken wings.

Have you tried a cash & carry?

They do seem to be creeping up in price - I suppose they have been promoted as a 'cheap' food which, ironically, pushes up demand.

Sometimes theres no obvious explaination - I like breast quarters but they can disappear for months on end.

M&S still do chinese style, barbecue style and hot and spicy ones.

Just to confirm you do mean raw plain chicken wings?

Maybe the increase in precooked and flavoured wings is having an effect. Also I see alot more pub menus offering wings & ribs.
Maybe we're getting a mini tex-mex invasion.

And we're coming up to BBQ season so maybe manufacturers are snaffling them all up before the reach the shelves to use in pre-packed BBQ meals/deals.

I think the shows Diners, Drive In's and Drives and Man Vs Food have something to do with this, as all of a sudden supermarkets are stocking chicken wings (much more than they used to) and things like Pulled pork, and brisket.
The butchers is the best bet for chicken wings as they always have them in.
