I think I've pinpointed my disdain for the Moffat era.

Unfulfilled promises.

I am of course talking about the publicity engine.

Lets take series 6 as an example.

An Utterly Epic Trailer. In fact one of the most exciting and amazing Who Trailers we've ever had.

That set the bar pretty high.

Each episode we get the a little tease of characters and a tease of potentially amazing story lines.

When it comes to the mid season reveal, were promised a game changer of a storyline.

What we get Falls flat.

More trailers promise epic and bold and big and amazing on a huge scale. What we get is a damp, confusing mess of a finale which doesnt work.

At the moment it doesnt know what it wants to be. Its marketing itself as a soaring, epic, emotional and involving TV experience, but they're delivering, bumbling, rambling comedic banter between the doctor and his companions set against a mildly entertaining backdrop.

Don't get me wrong Humour is good, banter is good.

But It just seems confused.

Clara has potntial to be an amazing character, but Jenna (whilst she started out strong) comes across as very stage school and overly expressive. She (for me ) doesn't do subtle emotion very well.

Take for example saturdays trip through the Tardis when she kept being led back to the control room. Her over the top, expressive frustration wouldn't be out of place in an oliver twist musical on the stage. It was too much

The run time also seems to keep everything moving along far to quickly for these types of episodes.

Fine if you want to be Bold and big with the story but give it room to breath.

HIDE was a masterclass in Dr Who episode storytelling. Best episode since season 4 for me.

Because it knew exactly how to play the entire story, didnt confuse the genres and delivered on all its promises.

Im willing and hoping and praying this massive Season Finale were promised delivers the goods.

Spot on.

It's as if they think the viewing figures are more important than the viewer satisfaction. Hype up every single episode as epic "must watch TV" for all DW fans. Who cares if the product is average at best?

I wish there was a way of counting all the posts that say something along the lines of "that episode was disappointing, but the trail for next week looked great". Week after week, they play the same game. Eventually, the viewers will drift away if they don't stop soon.

Im fed up of what sound like crucial lines in the post-Christmas trailer, like "Right Clara Oswald, time to find out who you are", which sounded at the time to be quite important, and it ended up being just a finishing line. Or the trailer for Hide, where the Doctor says "I am the Doctor and I am afraid", was really exciting in the trailer, but in the episode its just him trying to convince the creature that he afraid...I just don't want to trust any interesting lines as they end up being let downs.

Oh and episodes are also being too rushed, they need two parters.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

So, as far as I can tell, the best thing for you would be to skip the trailers and just take the series for what it actually is.


And yet, in both cases, they were important lines. The first sets up the entirely of the rest of the series, and the second was part of the Doctor figuring things out.
They're great lines - it's just a shame you developed a preconception of what they would mean in a different context. Nobody can tell that from just a trailer. It piqued your interest, and that's all it's supposed to do.

The CAPITALS are the PROBLEM with THIS THREAD'S TITLE.

So basically it's TRAILERS we don't like...

Oh no Amos....the Trailers we love....the actual show we hate

And they say the episodes move too fast and are too thin on plot....

Doctor Who has the best trailers i've ever seen. Seriously. THE best.

It's a pity we're only getting roughly 3 good eps per season, though. Maybe they should cut the running time down to 15 mins. Or maybe i should shut up with the dumb jokes, in case someone from the BBC reads this and thinks, "good idea."

There's your solution then. Watch the trailers but not the episodes

What the hell do you expect? Of course the trailer is going to make the series look epic/amazing/brilliant. That's what trailers are supposed to do.

Since I thought series 6 was some of the best stuff on TV I've ever seen, I don't think the trailers were a set up for a let down.

And yes- there do seem to be a lot of POSTS about "This episode was crap" etc. when you look at the actual poll results it becomes obvious that it is just a loud minority shouting how crap everything is, when in reality the opinion of each episode is mostly on the good-excellent side. It is fair enough to not like some episodes. No one can possibly like every single thing. The evidence that does exist is from viewing figures and poll results. Both are good and healthy and suggest the conclusion that the series as a whole is still very well loved by people in general.

If only there was some sort of official system for judging how well an episode is received. Some sort of index that would tell us the appreciation the audience have towards the episode.

I actually feel the trailer quality has been in decline.

Sort of like, ooh, I don't know.........an Appreciation Index!

The main problem is people, Moffat and other producers etc included, putting each episode on such a high pedestal. It only leaves each episode further to fall if it doesn't live up to it's creators hype.

You need a hype machine. Every show does. But one does feel Doctor Who believes it's own hype far too much these days and it leaves people feeling disappointed. I did prefer the days when the mid season eps would just happily bounce along under their own hype before RTD would come in with his promises for a big finale. It delivered because the hype was only for the finale. Not every episode of the series. Moffat has been bigging up every ep as a movie style ep and it hasn't been. It's how you hype it. I personally think they have it all wrong.

Less hype would bring less expectations and more surprise.

Less hype would lead to equal amounts of moaning about how the show isn't being pushed enough. Rock and a hard place.

Toned down hype is surprisingly hard to do as well. "Yeah, this series is alright I guess, some of you might enjoy it... there's some recurring problems surrounding endings, some episodes are a bit divisive, but meh, see what you make of it."

Completely agree.

It was only a few weeks ago some people were moaning that they hadn't seen much publicity in the run up to the start. And saying they wish we had some decent trailers.

You might be on to something there...you should suggest that to someone up top!

Who is this 'we' you speak of? Also you just admitted you hate the show. Time to stop watching perhaps? I hate Miranda. I don't watch it. Quite simple really.
