Sounds like you need Youview
http://www.youview.com/

£199.95 at Richersounds http://www.richersounds.com/product/...tr1000-youview

The above can be used with any ISP. The following may require changing your ISP

BT offer http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/tv

TalkTalk offer https://sales.talktalk.co.uk/product/tv

If you don't mind a refurbished machine you could get a Grade A Humax HDR Fox T2 for about 150 quid

Does Freeview HD and some on-demand services. Though not as many as you'd get with a YouView box.

I suggest the humax refurb. I've got a refurb of an older model and it was fine.

that referb one does look good, is humax normally the best or is there any other brand to consider?

Humax refurb would be your best bet....It's a cracking PVR and if you are coming from Virgin you might even notice an improvement (unless you had Tivo).

The free PVR from talktalk is very good. Have a look at the Argos ebay outlet, they usually have some good deals.

AFAIK you don't need fibre for the TalkTalk offer - you certainly don't with BT

The TalkTalk site says
" Through your TV aerial

Freeview channels are delivered through your TV aerial so you’ll need one that has a good signal to enjoy all of the benefits watching, pausing, rewinding and recording live TV.

2. Through your internet connection

Catch up TV and On demand players, including the TalkTalk player with its inclusive shows and films, are delivered through your broadband connection. You’ll need a speed of 3Mb to enjoy this service. If your speed is above 5Mb you’ll also be able add flexible monthly TV Boosts, such as Sky Movies and ESPN. These will sit within the player and you’ll soon also be able to record and rewind."
