HOW TO PLAY

QIPCO British Champions Series throws the spotlight on the best races in the British Flat racing calendar from May 4 to October 19 2013. There are 35 races in all, including iconic events such as QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, the Ladbrokes St Leger and QIPCO Champion Stakes. Now you can add to the excitement with the Telegraph's FREE TO PLAY QIPCO BCS game for the chance to win a fabulous holiday for two at the Hard Rock Hotel, Cancun, Mexico plus your own framed racing silks.

The aim of the game is to score the highest number of points in order to win the first prize. There are prizes of VIP and Premier Days racing for two for the winners of our five mini-series or five race categories.

Become a Fantasy Owner by selecting your stable of jockeys and trainers

Pick two horses in all 35 Series races. Click on BCS 2013 Race Calendar for dates and times of all races in the Series. Racecards will appear on the site 48 hours before each race. New this year – you will be able to make your horse selections on your mobile device via our mobile race card website.


Your five jockeys and five trainers will score points for you every time they have a runner, winner or placed horse in each of the Series' 35 races

Double points are scored for the final five Series races on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday, October 19


Your two horse selections in each race will score additional points for winning or being placed in a race (usually second or third)

You can select your stable at any time during the Series and you will score from the next race in the Series

After you have selected your stable, you can make changes to your stable of jockeys and trainers up to the scheduled start time of the next race in the Series

At the end of each Mini Series, you will be able to change your Jockeys and Trainers. Two changes are available in between each Mini Series making eight changes in total during the game

Make your horse selections from 48 hours before each race right up to the scheduled start time of each race and New for 2013, you can make your horse selections on the move via your mobile device

Many will see the QIPCO 2000 Guineas as a monumental showdown between two hugely exciting, unbeaten colts – Dawn Approach, the pride of Ireland who was Europe’s champion juvenile last year, and Toronado, who looked top notch when winning the Craven Stakes over the Guineas course and distance two weeks ago.

Dawn Approach has been favourite for the race all through the winter and his trainer, Jim Bolger, is delighted with his progress. "He is a much stronger horse this year. He's on a par with the best horses I've had.”

Jockey Richard Hughes has made no secret of the regard in which he holds Toronado: "Last year he was a big baby and I had to mind him, but he did so well physically through the winter and is now much stronger, and we have all been very excited about him for a long time now."

They could well finish first and second, but ignore Aidan O’Brien’s challengers at your peril! The Irish maestro has won the 2000 Guineas no less than six times in the past 15 years – a strike rate of 40% - including last year’s race with Camelot.

He saddles three runners on Saturday, Cristoforo Colombo, George Vancouver and Mars. The first two have the experience and will love the fast ground. Mars may prove the best of the trio over longer distances later in the season, but he is likely to find this too daunting on only his second start.

Garswood and Van Der Neer demand respect and would score you plenty of points if they make the first three, but Moohaajim appears unlikely to have the stamina for the mile trip. The rest have a lot to find.

ONE TO WATCH
There’s one big outsider worth watching – that’s Kyllachy Rise, trained by the legendary Sir Henry Cecil, who saddled Frankel to win the race two years ago. Beaten in his only two races to date, he wouldn’t be on most people’s radar, but the Stable Whisperer has heard that he is very highly regarded by Sir Henry and while this may be a step too far so early in his career against a clutch of battle-hardened colts, he is certainly one to watch for the future.

A cracking renewal of the QIPCO 1000 Guineas is in prospect as the race celebrates its 200th running, with huge confidence behind several of the leading fancies. More than one trainer is going to be disappointed! With the favourite unlikely to be much shorter than 3-1, there’s plenty of good options when making your selections.

First up there’s the unbeaten Hot Snap, trained by Sir Henry Cecil. She was very impressive when winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and looks very hard to beat on that performance. “She’s coming into the race in great shape,” said her racing manager, Lord Grimthorpe. Sir Henry is very hopeful she will win, but so too are those associated with her chief rivals.

What A Name, the main French challenger, has strong form from last year and looked very good on her reappearance over seven furlongs last month for trainer Mikael Delzangles. "I have never known Mikael so bullish about a horse,” said one of the owners in his yard. And Delzangles is not the type to be bullish without good reason!

Just The Judge, meanwhile, owned by a subsidiary of the sponsors, QIPCO Holding, is the apple of her owners’ eyes. Their racing manager, David Redvers, said: “She’s a big strong girl. She has an amazing length of stride. I think we’ve got the best chance we could ever have in the Guineas.”

The Hannon pair, Sky Lantern and Maureen, can’t be ruled out and nor can Aidan O’Brien’s Moth whom he supplemented for the race at a cost of £30,000 on Monday. She finally won last month and they have always thought very highly of her at home – “Her work has always been exceptional” said O’Brien this week.

ONE TO WATCHSky Lantern may have been beaten fair and square by Hot Snap in the Nell Gwyn Stakes, but she travelled like the winner for a long way in the race and was conceding three pounds in weight which she won’t be on Sunday. Assistant trainer, Richard Hannon Jr, said this week: “She has done very well since and she will be a lot fitter”. She could prove a value pick for the game at a double-figure price.

RACE TRENDSir Henry Cecil knows all about what it takes to win this race having won it six times before – twice as many as any other current trainer - though the last one was in 1999. Time for a “magnificent seven” with Hot Snap?

Saturday, June 1, Epsom Downs, 2.40pm, The Investec Coronation CupOn form, official ratings and past success in this race, this year’s Investec Coronation Cup looks a formality for the long odds-on favourite, St Nicholas Abbey.

He’s won the race for the last two years and if anything his form is getting better with age – he routed his rivals in the Dubai Sheema Classic on Dubai World Cup Night in March.

If he shows up in the same form as he has the last two years, it is very hard to see him getting beaten, though the second-favourite, Dunaden, is also improving and cannot be completely discounted.

The big question for him is whether a mile and a half (12 furlongs) is far enough for him to show his best. His big day came in the two-mile Melbourne Cup in 2011. His two victories since then have both been over a mile and a half, but both were in overseas races against weaker opposition than St Nicholas Abbey.

His runs in top class 12 furlong races have tended to see him finishing strongly without ever posing a real threat, as was the case when he finished 4 ¾ lengths behind St Nicholas Abbey in Dubai in March.

Chamonix, a stablemate of St Nicholas Abbey, is a tough stayer, but this is a huge step up in class. Chapter Seven is there to make the pace for Dunaden, which will certainly help his cause.

ONE TO WATCHJoshua Tree is worth a second look. He was disappointing in the QIPCO Yorkshire Cup earlier in the month, but had to carry a weight penalty and 14 furlongs on soft ground on his first start of the season appeared to find him out. Ed Dunlop has only trained him for a few months but rates him highly, describing him as “a class horse”, and he should run a much better race on Saturday. On official ratings, he is only two pounds behind Dunaden. He wouldn’t want the going too soft though, so keep an eye on the weather and ground.

RACE TRENDAidan O’Brien has almost made the race his own in recent times, training the winner six times in the last eight years, while the favourite has won the last three runnings. That speaks firmly in St Nicholas Abbey’s favour, though no horse has ever won the race three times, which St Nicholas Abbey will attempt to make history by doing on Saturday.



Saturday, June 1, Epsom Downs, 4.00pm, The Investec DerbyA red hot Investec Derby with the one horse who might be able to take over Frankel’s mantle, Dawn Approach, pitted against a host of other promising three-year-old colts in the world’s most famous Flat race.

Unbeaten and a deeply impressive winner of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas over a mile, Dawn Approach looks a class above his rivals on Saturday, but the race would appear to hinge on one crucial factor. Will the Jim Bolger-trained colt stay the mile and a half trip?

His sire, New Approach, won the Investec Derby in 2008. If that bodes well for his stamina, the female side of his breeding does not and anyone who backs him to follow in his father’s footsteps is undoubtedly taking a big risk, especially as pacemakers will try to ensure that any stamina weakness is exposed. At such a short price, he could not be recommended as a pick in the game.

There are a clutch of other contenders who are much more certain to stay the mile and a half trip and who also have the potential to win.

The first ever German-trained runner in the Investec Derby, Chopin, was recently bought by Qatar Racing and though he has yet to race beyond nine furlongs, his breeding pretty much guarantees that he will excel over 12 furlongs. He has a live chance.

Battle Of Marengo, one of five Aidan O’Brien-trained runners, has won his last five races and is an ultra-tough colt. He looks sure to be in the thick of the action, but may lack a little bit of class.

The unbeaten Ruler Of The World is another O’Brien contender. He’s already won over this trip and could have any amount of improvement in him. He’s a definite contender.

Ocavango represents French champion trainer Andre Fabre, who won the race with Pour Moi in 2011. Unbeaten in three starts and certain to get the trip, he’s another not to overlook lightly.

Libertarian is Britain’s best hope after he ran out the shock winner of our main Derby Trial, the Betfred Dante Stakes at York earlier in May. Will he handle the track though?

ONE TO WATCHYet another Aidan O’Brien contender, Mars, warrants considerable respect. O’Brien played down his chances in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, saying that he would learn from the experience. He ran very promisingly, keeping on well to finish sixth. Pitched into the Derby with only two races under his belt is a big ask, but he undoubtedly has the potential and the word earlier in the year was that he was one of the main Classic hopes for the O’Brien stable. The vibes now are that he shouldn’t be overlooked on Saturday, especially with Richard Hughes in the saddle. But as with our “One To Watch” in the Coronation Cup, if the ground was to turn Soft, confidence would be diminished.

RACE TRENDSix of the 13 Derby winners this century have been trained in Ireland, though with seven of the 12 runners contesting this year’s race Irish-trained, that doesn’t narrow things down too much!
